Um...

hmm.

Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs
Swans - Cop/Young God
Black Flag - My War (in that it only sounds good when you're really depressed)
Rollins Band - "Turned Inside Out"
The Birthday Party - Junkyard
The Pop Group - Y

more to come.

'All the Madmen' by David Bowie should be added to the list, I think. And a huge host of homebrew 'noise' stuff...maybe G.X. Jupiter's 'Mr. California' for starters.

"Going Insane" records and no one's mentioned Whitehouse? That and Sutcliffe Jugend makes me feel every particle of my life being sapped from my bones.

Man, I was just going to mention those exact bands as a textbook example of being too sane.

FYP?

Whitehouse and SJ are so unsane it is somewhat frightening.

Also, Masonna can easily be added to that list, as well as most of Gerogerigegege's work.[/b]

Nah. Gerogerigegege is pretty nutty, Masonna is performance art, but my take is that Whitehouse and Sutcliffe Jugend get their power from simply being too honest and close to the source. It's cold steel sanity in a world of bewildering self-deception and psychological cowardice that seems like madness. My view, anyway. Disturbing, yes. But sane.

Not that it's totally incomprehensible, but 'insane' is always an adjective I throw around when describing this record.
