In Black List by Prefuse73, MF Doom wrote:“I can stop anytime I want to.”
Famous last words that came back to haunt you
All your life, like permanent dried tears.
Some cats get it like no bright ideas.
He broke the record then bowed.
Said he couldn’t do it without the crowd, for crying out loud.
Even took the time to contaminate the rhyme scene
And drop a lot before he was out, in the common scene...

In the same song, Aesop Rock wrote: Look buddy, we’ve gotta talk.
God made me a fine instrument of style
Zig zag zisfiss?
Don’t make me holy sleep bolts blindly until your mood shifts.
Now here comes 40 acres of congruency pistons,
Purple skeleton key immunity systems.
Aw, it’ll be something incredible.
See, I know the limit.
That’s why I do my best to stay quiet
Whenever I ain’t spittin the gimmick.

Why? wrote:It makes perfect sense for children to practice having love affairs at summer camp,
it's practical evolution;
the perfect chance to pollenate another city with blanks.
only seeming more intentional than the seeds of a dead dandelion
getting caught in the breeze and the act that follows,
you'd like to think of as a passive fertilization,
well it might be as dodgy deliberate as the bar scene or date rape.
it makes perfect sense for children to practice making sex at summer camp.

and also

I know,
all beautiful places
are prone to natural disaster.
but being swallowed

Big Pun wrote:With one pistol and two clips, I'll make your crew do flips

Saul Williams wrote:Intellect is like a major city
Laden with concrete, metal
Advanced modes of transportation
Shining buildings, and fenced in parks
Spirit is the mountain's forest wilderness
and vast countryside that surrounds it
Too many people live in the city
Struggling day to day for mere existance
Most have forgotten how to live off the land
They only experience nature on class trips
and short-term vacations
For those that live in the country
Cities are like amusement parks with high prices
and temporal satisfaction
At the end of the day, they are tired
and ready to go home, and relieve their ringing ears

Sole wrote: No, this is gangsta rap and my shirt's unbuttoned

Atmosphere! Not since Q-tip have I enjoyed rhtmz this much:

I'm sparked, waiting for the dark to hit
Cuz when the moon gets above my apartment, I catch fits for starting shit
I'm smart with it, I give it that special touch when I push it
Cuz I'm also a label rep, and I can't allow no bullshit
So shush kid, shush baby! Shut your eyes
Lay your head back, shed the fear and let the tears crystallize
I wish the flies to land upon your forehead
When I extract the essence from your head and leave your body resting moored
I left more dead reputations than HIV kings
But for every killing there's a reason and its not just emcees, man!
I'm watching C-SPAN, waiting for the first state rep
To take the first step, to have to kill off to make this world perfect
Well lets get shit right, right here! Right now! Right away!
Atmosphere motherfucker! If I need to I could fly away
I'll grind you and your weak crew into beef stew
Serve you with seafood, you can't cloud my vision cuz you're see-thru

[Spawn]
You need to recognize the size of the atlas
You ain't as tall as half this - match this - past what you practice
Obviously you can't fuck with my tactics, you bastard
Thats why you breath fast bitch - no need to ask

[Slug]
We dug the fingernails underneath the skin of your scalp, then peeled it
Sent your underdeveloped pre-school style on a field trip
Now bite your tongue, this is how the mic gets done

A whole tree to pick some fruit from, man! You had to choose the ripest one

[Spawn]
That said it all, it comes from inside ,and how you ride
the sound wire when it's live and the vibes feelin right
Catchin' the motion given by rhythms when you hit 'em on time
with lines, makin' sure your rhyme soundin' tight
Your voice should travel without the babble of the average emcee
so listen please use discretion when you breath
sound is vibration, I choose to use it with a vision
and then comes the style and precision...

[Slug]
No more longer will we hold your hands. Why? Cuz you're too damn old
Oh yea, the network called, they told me to tell ya you've been canceled
They also said big up for all the support

Thanks to your devotion, they now control the world
So let your head down and eat the poison with a tall glass of Tang
I'm rising past the bang, with smile I'm flashin my fangs
I tumble over some, cuz some I don't over stand
I got the crowd respond, from now on, I know the plan

[Spawn]
It's the noise it makes, to generate the passion I have
It's the void it breaks, that stimulates when mics get grabbed
It takes shape - escapes from these vocal chords I have
Atmosphere: music makers from the Rhymesayers lab

[Slug]
Come now, ??? test the giants, when we apply this
Vice grips to your eyelids to make you read the fine print
The tyrants that gave you crisis, left you silenced
Don't breath a sigh of relief 'till you hear the rescue sirens

[Spawn]
Supreme, be this team, we got this shit on lock
Obviously we hid the key under an upscale rock
So you could knock all you want to but you ain't gettin' in
You could try to crash the door but you ain't gettin' in
Nigga, what! My definition is raw, I got you all
wishin' I'd fall, so things could get better for y'all
but I'm tall, and got game, remain the same for the duration

Area Code 6-1-2, my present location...

[Slug]
Atmosphere...embellished with talent and the wisdom not abuse it
Blessed with insight, friends and affluences
Thats what keeps us dope, what makes us dope is the surroundings
Inspiration stems from love and stress compounding
Stamina: that is achieved over the course of time
in fact, time taught me how to breath, battle, not to court my mind
defined as lyricist - the Atmosphericist
makin sure you fear this hit every time you hear this shit

I'm a disciple of science
I know the universe is compliance with natural laws,
but many place reliance on the psuedo-science of quacks and
morons and fools because,
their educations deficient,
they put faith in omniscient,
make believe beings who control their fate,
but the Hawk aint with it, dig it,
their Holy writ aint the least bit legit,
its a bunch of bullshit.

"E" stands for energy, yo that's me,
I'm a brilliant scientist and a dope MC.
Before you step to me I'd think twice G,
I'm the Lord of Chaos, King of Entropy.
You down with it? I motherfuckin' hope so,
'cause if you're not, I got a motherfuckin' rope yo!
I'll string you up, from a big-ass tree,
with a sign round your neck that says, "Wack MC".
There ain't another motherfucker hard like me,
I'm a universal constant, I'm a singularity.
Got Doomsday at my back with fat-ass tracks,
he pumps funk in the cracks and cuts wax with an axe.
So listen up bitch, 'cause there may be a test,
my style is smooth, but it's hard to digest.
My science is tight, rhymes faster than light,
like a ton of TNT I'm about to ignite.

I'm rolling through the hood on a Saturday night,
got a 40 in my left hand, my dick in my right,
some chronic in my lap, a pager in my cap,
and a 9 millimeter in the small of my back.
I'm just chilling no place to be,
I take another pull off my 40 z.
I'm thinking 'bout spinning a fat ass tree,
a B to the L to the U-N-T.

Then I get a call on my dope cell phone,
check the caller ID, what up homes?
Yo, it's the Doom and his news ain't good:
"little Pookie got capped last night in the hood."
I feel like the world is fading away,
I saw Little Pookie just the other day.
Pookie was my boy we shared Kool-aid in the park,
now some punks took his life in the dark.

I ask Doomsday who the motherfuckers be,
"some punk ass bitches from MIT."
The fucking Institute, man I should've known,
I say meet me at my crib and hang up the phone.
Playtimes over I got a job to do,
and the world will be less crowded by the time I'm through,
and I'll keep rolling while bullets fly,
cause all my shootings be drivebys.

"For those who pose lyrical/ But really ain't true I feel..."

steve wrote:Having read every single word in this thread, I am more convinced than ever that I have not missed a goddamn thing by not acquiring a taste for hip hop.

While I won't go as far as Steve, I will say that I find the majority of this genre to be miss-able. There are a few exceptions, though.

"Everybody's either crime-related or sexual..."

Many of my favorite hip-hop quotables are conveniently located in one song, "Time's Up" by O.C. (Omar Credle) of the D.I.T.C. crew. He works his way around the lyrics rather nicely. It's like an after-school special in parlance of the streets.

If you're unfamiliar with the song, here's an mp3

You lack the minerals and vitamins, irons and the niacin
Fuck who that I offend, rappers sit back I'm 'bout to begin
'Bout to foul talk your squad, never even walked the walk
More less destined to get tested, never been arrested

My album will manifest many things that I saw did or heard about
Or told first hand, never word of mouth
What's in the future for the fusion in the changer
Rappers are in danger, who will use wits to be a remainder

When the missile is aimed, to blow you out of the frame
Some will keep their limbs and some will remain
The same suckers with the gab about killer instincts
Will turn bitch knowin' damn well they lack

In this division the connoisseur, crackin' your head with a 4 by 4
Realize sucka, I be the comin' like Noah
Always sendin' you down, perpetratin', façadin', what you consider
An image, to me this is, just a scrimmage

I'm feel I'm stone, not cause I bop or wear my cap cocked
The more emotion I put into it, the harder I rock
Those who pose lyrical but really ain't true I feel
[To be down you must appeal]

Speakin' in tongues about what you did but you never done it
Admit you bit it cause the next man gained platinum behind it
I find it ironic, so I researched and analyzed
Most write about stuff they fantasized

I'm fed up with the bull, on this focus of weed and clips
And Glocks gettin' cocked, and wax not bein' flipped
It's the same ole-same ole, just strainin' from the anal
The content is not complexed or vexed

So why you puhsin' it? Why you lyin' for? I know where you live
I know your folks, you was a sucka as a kid
Your persona's drama, that you acquired in high school in acting class
Your whole aura is plexi-glass

What's-her-face told me you shot this kid last week in the park
That's a lie, you was in church with your moms
See I know yo, slow your roll, give a good to go
Guys be lackin' in this thing called rappin just for dough

Of course we gotta pay rent, so money connects, but uhh
I'd rather be broke and have a whole lot of respect
It's the principal of it, I get a rush when I bust
Some dope lines I wrote, that maybe somebody'll quote

That's what I consider real, in this field of music
Instead of puttin' brain cells to work they abuse it
Non-conceptual, non-exceptional
Everybody's either crime-related or sexual

I'm here to make a difference, besides all the riffin'
To traps I'm not stickin', rappers stop flippin'
For those who pose lyrical but really ain't true I feel
[To be down you must appeal]

Thanks for the link and input. I enjoyed that song - nice phrasing on the lyrics.

I suppose as you suggest it raises some valid points/

I agree with you here. It's a bit of a load of bollocks sometimes in that sense.

Sometimes, however, that's what it's all about... MC battles - fighting to be the best ...

The thing is, again, this in my opinion is only a percentage of what you hear - a lot of rock music is similarly a pile of self-indulgent wankery. They may not say it straight, but it is just as bad in my opinion.

I just think with all genres, some of it is shite, and some of it is good. When you find the good stuff then the picture becomes clearer.
