Band: Death Cab For Cutie

Not crap for the following reasons:
-Very nice and catchy melodies. I like them for the same reasons I like a bands like Seam, Built to Spill (pre-Warner) and Sebadoh etc. I can understand why people don't like them though.

-Ben Gibbard has a great voice and can actually sing live with enviable pitch. Lyrically he can also be brilliant at times and cringe-worthy at others which keeps it interesting.

-Although they are now on a major, it was on their own terms rather than from swimming through the shit trenches.

-They produce and record themselves in the studio where Bleach was recorded which they own. The guitarist Chris Walla seems to be quite competent and their albums sound good.

I don't think they have anywhere to go but down from "Plans" which is very solid album in my opinion, only time will tell I guess.

In a battle of the Cabs though, I'd have to go with the Don.

I concur.

The Hall of Justice (aka Reciprocal/Word of Mouth/John and Stu's) isn't operating as a studio anymore, though Chris Walla has moved most of the gear down to his home studio in Portland. His website has a complete gear list.

N/C high waffle factor for having so many really, really boring songs.

Company Calls/ Company Calls Epilogue are good songs and the Photo Album is mostly great tracks, too. Haven't listened to their albums regularly in four or five years--all their songs are kinda same-y. But then again, I love Superchunk so who am I to say where the line of all-their-songs-sound-the-same should be drawn.

What a prediction! :P

I think the new album is pretty crappy in my opinion. They definitely jumped the shark on this one. There a few catchy tracks (Grapevine Fires, Ice is Getting Thinner etc.) but this album makes me understand the hostility towards this band.

When you're writing a song about furniture and its a rip off of your other song about furniture, I think its time to look for some new inspiration...

I used to have a soft spot for this band but Plans made me reevaluate that. I can no longer tolerate the wispy Elliot Smith/Death Cab sensitive songwriter thing. Crap. Waffles for the song "President of What?"

I think I'm getting to that point as well. I think a lot of the reason I liked this band was that they filled the Elliott Smith/Lou Barlow spot with a touch of Built to Spill/Seam/Weakerthans vibe, but the only way that works is if the delivery feels honest, and to me, the new album does not. I thought Plans was brilliant, but likely because it was my first real exposure to this band. The production (all analog btw), the melody and many of the lyrics for that album are very good in my opinion and rather than except it with its flaws and pretension, I could have just as easily hated it. In retrospect, I'm really glad I saved that for the new album :P
