So, when I get home and play my Steely Dan Can't Buy a Thrill LP, and "manipulate" the tone and balance controls, and perhaps play with the speed-control, I am making New Music.
This is important, and cool.
That's problem one: you listen to Steely Dan.
Super Furry Animals' "Man Don't Give a Fuck" is based off a looped sample of Steely Dan's "Showbiz Kids".
just thought I'd throw that out there to tie some loose ends.

Let me get this straight. The Boredoms is music, but DJ Shadow isn't?

I also thought the first FOG album was a good axample of the turntable as a "musical instrument" What the fuck do I know?

Who knows? Steel Dan? I'd rather listen to a dental drill.

"Negativ Nein" by Einsturzende Neubauten is a good example of a drill as a "musical instrument"

I get the impression that those 100% opposed to DJs think that they are simply playing and changing up ONE record.
How do you all feel about laptops being used for live sound manipulation? Sorta the same thing, isn't it?
Whoever made the "pedal" analogy, I liked that a lot, and laughed plenty. That's the best thing said in this thread.
Racebannon had a DJ as a part of their band over the course of several albums. They are probably my favorite band with a DJ in it. My favorite DJ that has played "original" music that I have heard is Kid606. I do not particularly like DJ dance music, but within the context of a band, or "mash-ups" "chopped and screwed" or whatever, I do think original music is being made, even despite the source material.
Why did we make computers when we already had typewriters? Progress is stupid.

What Weston does in MOB is a part of the overall experience. What Weston is doing wouldn't exist without MOB hitting the notes first, so this isn't really the best argument. He's using the tape deck that records them playing and manipulates accordingly. Not much different than a mellotron (with the exception of no keys..)
