were you guys in the old 24/7 studios? the new one (madison music foundry) off fish hatch, is really nice. I have a space there with a band mate, it's kinda expensive right now, but once we get a bass player, and or find another band to share it with, it'll be much more affordable.

2. Modey Lemon - Psychedelic bluespunk. Were just a duo at first, now they have two guitarst/moog'ers and a drummer.

3. Tabula Rasa - Now defunct four peice Indie/Math/Rock

4. Dirty Faces - Self proclaimed "stadium rock for bars." Definitely a live act.

5. The Bad Genes - Early 90's punk with some ska guitar.

Even though have had about 15 drummers.

Worth going through 15 drummers if you wind up with Stanier in the end.

They're one of very, very few Australian bands ever that I'd say were actually good, and worth listening to for reasons other than local pride.

I have always been vocal about considering the mountains of East Tennessee and Western North Carolina my hometown so I don't feel like this is a stretch.

Here are five Chapel Hill bands that are good live:

1. Monsonia is a sturdy rock trio with hiredgeek on bass. They have some Shellac qualities, but their drummer is a busy-playing jazz-influenced guy, unusual in the genre.

2. Blag'ard is Capsize 7's Joe Taylor on Polvo/Truman's-style rhythm guitar and vocals, and hard-hitting Adam Brinson on drums and vocals. I like this band, and I wish there were more than 5-10 people at their shows.

3. Black Taj is a classic rock band with great riffs and a strong rhythm section. Brylawski and Popson of Polvo are members. Black Taj is my favorite local band, and maybe my favorite current band. I think their new album is finished, and although I am excited because their new songs are righteous, I think they may have fussed the life out of it like they did the other one.

4. In The Year Of The Pig is a very loud rock group involving two-string bass, two drummers, 20-minute medleys, and animal hats. They are the most visually exciting band in town.

5. Many of you would enjoy Hazerai. It is a punk rock trio in the Kill Taker era Fugazi or Dazzling Killmen vein. Good guys. Their last EP's cover art was composed with Kid Pix, and they mastered it themselves. They also win best Myspace "Sounds Like."

I will spare you my praise of Black Skies, Dexter Romweber, and the Kingsbury Manx. This place rules.
