Do you plan on having a family?

As unsaved pointed out above, fertility treatment is not a completely riskfree fun baby factory of giggles. I have a family member who opted for the "natural" approach and now has two twins, one of whom I'm guessing will turn out with some mental health issues (you'd really have to meet the kid to see where I'm coming from) and one who has mild-severe autism. While there's no way to be certain whether the childrens' problems were related to the treatment, the doctors agreed that the twins thing was almost certainly a result of it.

Now that said family member has two difficult children to deal with, she will never be returning to her job as a professor. She worked very hard for that PhD and loved her job. I hope passing on her genetics was worth it to her.

No invasive medical procedure is risk free but what are the odds? I suppose some people could pull out examples like that but the incidence will be low, otherwise fertility treatment wouldn't be carried out.

The first test tube baby's mother could not conceive because her fallopian tubes were damaged. That's not quite the same as, "our sperm and egg refuse to get together because our genetic code will likely create a deleterious by-product."

Couples who would otherwise be sterile and seek fertility treatments or artificial insemination piss me off, especially since I've found so many of them to also believe that abortion is wrong because it goes against "God's will." Yeah, and the doctor manufacturing your offspring in a laboratory is totally what God had in mind when He made your uterus barren and your husband's sperm retarded. Go adopt some of the unwanted babies you didn't want aborted, you selfish hypocritical assholes.

You must live in a pretty religious society I guess, Mandroid. The people I know who have had fertility problems aren't religious and don't see it is devine right to procreate. I don't know what they feel about abortion. They just have the same biological / psychological urges as most people (not everyone, of course) to raise a family.

Then why don't they adopt one of the countless children in the world who need a home?
They are fucking selfish ignorant assholes, that's why. exactly the type who shouldn't be having kids.
I'd like to hear one of those couples explain to me why they have opted to undergo those fertility procedures instead of adopting. I'd really like to hear how they convinced themselves it's the right thing to do and not a horrible evil slap in the face to every orphan child out there.

Well maybe because the need is so great that they'd like to try all the biological steps first. It's a pretty successful procedure you know.

Wait a minute. By your logic all couples with fertility problems should be morally obliged to adopt an orphan?

Holy fuck.

First off 'all the biological steps' are as follows:
1. Fucking.
2. Fucking some more.
That's it.

And Holy fuck? How could you sit there as a human being and even consider making a new baby when there are so many children already on this planet who don't have a family? Why shouldn't human beings be forced to clean up their own fucking mess before just plopping out more and more and more kids?
There are millions of orphans out there, alone with nobody. There's kids starving to death right now, there's kids living in boxes on the street and across town Richard and Susie yuppie are spending 10 grand at a fucking fertility clinic trying to have a baby? Huh? What? That's fucking monstrously evil.
I'm supposed to be cool with this shit?
People are ignorant self centered assholes and I hate them to no end.

Take that 10 grand and give someone who's already here a life, you disgusting selfish assholes.

What's so shocking?

I wouldn't use the term moral obligation, but do any other situations exist where adoption is anywhere near as strongly suggested? I can't think of any.

I don't care if people want/have kids, but it does kind of bug the hell out of me when this pregnancy struggle situation arises and it is shown that what the people involved actually wanted the whole time is not kids but lineage.

Not only is all the spending and drama a real drag to be around, it's so embarrassing to have to watch people dress up naked self-obsession as healthy. And it's also nauseating to see the service economy in the west so ready to indulge.

I'm all for adoption, but it takes on the role as a second option for most people. It's not bad to have biological children.

When there are millions of children on the planet right now who've been abandoned by their parents and have nowhere to live and nobody to take care of them, feed them and raise them?
Yes it is.
If everyone would just stop, look around and agree that maybe we should make sure all the children who already exist have somewhere to go before we create even more...well, I think that'd be a real decent thing for us humans to do, wouldn't it?
Someone tell me why you decided to have your own kid instead of taking a child in who didn't have a home, when everyone knows theres so many out there....tell me why, let's hear it.

In what way is it feasible to get all couples looking to have children to adopt? That's up to the couple. Maybe some kind of financial incentive, but you can't seriously expect me to frown upon having biological kids.

You're expecting everyone to work towards a common goal, and to serve humanity, when that's never the case. At least, that what it sounds like.

I am not expecting everyone to do anything but to keep doing what they have been doing forever, and that's what makes me so angry/sad.
I like how it's just an absurd notion for people to even consider, not having a baby. Even though there's enough babies already in the world for everyone who wants one to get one, it's still completely absurd to even consider not having another one.
Man, we are one seriously fucked up species.
