This was my first tattoo and I received it from a tattoo parlor called 5 Points when I was a skeeter-winged Private PV2, fresh out of basic training at Fort Jackson with a few paychecks burning a hole in my pocket, and finally not living under father's roof/rules.
Because technically we're not supposed to have tattoos on our hands, I got a white ink tattoo on our first three-day pass, and was shitting kittens on the fourth day when, to my surprise, it still looked quite obviously like a fresh tattoo.
The message tattooed is “GOLD LION” which is the title of a song by a band I liked in high school, whose name I have already forgotten.
Since then it got infected and scarred over because I couldn't follow a few simple instructions. Some of the lettering is illegible, and as you can see from the photograph above, it now says "COLD LICE". I still get defensive about it.
It's true what everyone says, once you get one tattoo below the wrist, you will be discharged from the service - then when you're "back on the block" you can get all the tattoos you want, especially when your best new job prospect is tattoo-shop apprentice/janitor.
