I always hated "moshing" and "crowd surfing" and all that shit so to see Fugzai put a stop to it at their shows was very satisfying for me. I credit them for putting an end to that practice. Shows are so much more enjoyable without it. I know the nu metal and juggalo kids still do it but that's not my scene so I don't care.

I just wanted to watch a band as close to the stage as possible and "pits" always made that difficult. The selfish sweaty closeted jock punk primates swinging their arms and running in a circle up front could always go fuck themselves as far as I was concerned so seeing Fugazi put a stop to them was always inspiring.

Once I saw Ian tell some unreasonable ape to leave the show. They would not start playing again until he had left. Beautiful.

I agree with nearly everyone here that Fugazi's stance against moshing and the like was quite refreshing.

But let's not forget the flipside of the tedium that would ensue whenever some half-wit punk jocko failed to take an obvious hint: when the audience at a Fugazi show did collectively abstain from such juvenile horseplay, Fugazi concerts were AWESOME. You could all just lock into the music and feed off the band's energy. One of the best of seven shows I was fortuante enough to see them play was the one at First Avenue with BLC and the Poster Children. The audience that night had utmost propriety and as a result the band was un-fucking-stoppable.

Btw, Fugazi were obviously N/C. They were one of my two or three favorite bands for years. Like all superb rock groups they had a great combination of personalities. People give Ian too much credit and attention sometimes -- it was a band, and the four of them playing together is what made it interesting.

Don't get me wrong, Ian's a-ok, but if anything my sensiblities are much more Guy-ish.

God that sounded gay.

You know what I mean.

This was a great show, the kids hated, hated, hated, Brick Layer Cake.

w/r/t the albums, they all still up well for me, w/ End Hits being I think, my favorite

Though honestly, 13 Songs, Repeater, Steady Diet these records were my introduction to the band and really my first introduction to underground music, someone gave them a tape of them at party in high school (a theatre geek party), so I sort hold them in place outside of normal best/worst ranking.

13 songs is the greatest collection of rock music ever released on one CD
13 Songs and Atomizer were my introduction to real music. I was working at my punk rock high school radio station, doing the thrash show on Friday nights, not paying any attention to all this other weird music that the punks would play, 'stupid punk crap' I would say....the station manager who was probably the coolest dude I've ever met in my life pulls me aside one day and hands me a cassette with 13 songs on one side and atomizer on the other. He tells me to listen to it, all of it that night and report back to him tommorrow.
I go home and throw it on and my life has never been the same.

Absolutely. No one should ever be ashamed to have missed out on something, even if i'm the goofball looking at them shell shocked that they've never heard, say, a Superchunk or Archers of Loaf record.

I'm 33 and still have severe gaps in my music knowledge. One of the great things about that, though, is that i'm always discovering new stuff, even if it's, like, the Alice Cooper discography for the first time last year.

Don't let that goofball fly get ya down.

i only play, i make no efforts to hurt people.

if you get hurt by some punk on the interweb, you got issues.

Aw, come on!

I wasn't hurt by any of that...jeez-os. It's just a conversation...also, fly gave me some great Wire mp3's about seven months ago, so it's all good.

I would also like to take the time to say that "Facet Squared" officially eats my face. Goddamn - how are they getting that clip-in/out feedback sound? with a pickup switch?
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

Did we see the same movie? I thought they came off as pretty funny guys in Instrument, especially when Ian rags on the kid for being an "Ice Cream eatin' motherfucker" or sacrifices the cocoanut monkey head. My reaction after seeing it was, "Who knew Fugazi had such a sense of humor?"

Oh, and as musicians they're astounding. Antithesis of crap.

That was Guy. I dunno, I saw them live and they weren't super serious assholes. I dunno how they got the rep for being like that.

I'll tell you one reason- because they stop shows all the time, whenever the crowd starts dancing too wild. And by wild I mean aby crowd-surfing. I've seen it twice and caused it once. Yeah I agree with their standpoint against violent moshing but jeez Ian relax a little. Otherwise they seem chill but still a wee to serious. Plus I think their major fans overreact to their smatterings of humor, like "omigod Ian made a funny wow we're so lucky."

Anyway they still slay and melt face. Go Fugazi!

god you are an idiot.

So ok, look at how the band operated. They did everything themselves, they were responsible for every aspect of the shows.
Say some dickhead gets dropped on their head and paralysed and decides to sue, or someone is injured by some asshole slamming into people and decides to sue...like has happened to bands and venues several times....hmmm....yeah, I can kinda see where they'd wanna minimize the children crowd surfing and jumping off shit since something like that could completely destroy everything they'd been working on for years and years
why the fuck you'd go to a Fugazi show and start crowd surfing and slamming into people is beyond me, they are pretty clear on the fact they don't want that shit going on yet every time you'd see all these people jumping around like idiots....then complain when they stop the show to ask people to calm the fuck down....I get pissed that people are jumping around at this band's show when they know damn well the band does not want people jumping around and they have to stop 5 times to ask people to chill the fuck out

Marsup has brought up a good point here. I remember (if my memory serves me correctly) Ian saying that there was a Fugazi or Minor Threat show where this woman got seriously hurt from idiots in the audience moshing etc. I believe she was paralyzed from the waist or neck down after that; they had to carry her out of the show on a stretcher.

so, mind your own, y'all!

also, yes. a pickup switch. fugazi used very little effects. i think guy had a distortion stompbox, and in the studio a wah was used a couple times. that's all i know about fugazi and fx. mostly it was feedback and just physical manipulation of the guitar, i.e.-playing the hell out it. pick scrapes, neck bends, pickup switching, etc.
buy my guitar. now with pictures!

Weird, I've seen them play, the crowd was moving like mad, some kid kept stage diving and all Ian did was make fun of the kid for being a prick...fair dues.

Crowd surfers are fucking cunts, anyone over the age of 14 doing it probably has mental health issues.
