That's interesting, my ranking actually goes:

1. Royal Scam
2. Pretzel Logic
3. Aja
4. Gaucho
5. Katy Lied
6. Countdown
7. Can't Buy

I don't rank the comeback albums either. Kamakiriad could go right under Gaucho to me, though.

I've never heard a single song by them - at least not knowingly.

Now I suppose I'm gonna have to check them out

Teacher's Pet wrote: Fri Feb 10, 2023 11:09 am For me SD's music is vaguely evocative of 1970s dinner parties of my youth.
My 70’s memory of Steely Dan: Riding in the back of a station wagon on a hot summer day with no A/C as my mom drives recklessly down the old dirt road we lived on. Windows down, red dust everywhere, and a Steely Dan song playing on an AM station out of Shreveport. We would be driving to a place I’d rather not be, like church or the grocery store or a Cub Scout day camp. I would be nauseous, and Steely Dan only made it worse. A few years later, I would discover metal and punk, which I loved because it sounded nothing like that awful music playing in the station wagon.

I have no time for Steely Dan in this life. Maybe another life, but not this one.
That's rather beautiful, really.

I was having a great time reading the comments on FB when the NME article about Steve's insults popped up. No matter what side was taken, the excess of super serious comments was great. I, like many here, don't have time for SD. I know some fine people (okay, two) who like SD. I like those people. That is as close as I'll get to liking SD. However, I'm all about people bickering over SD.

I loved the one FB comment where a guy said something like, "This reminds me of how David Crosby used to cry about hating the Doors. See where that got him."

Like, okay? Dead after a long life? Like opposed to who? Maybe if he hadn't shit talked the Doors he'd be alive today.

Oh and "Dansplaining" is a great one.

Yeah. I can't stand them, but respect for that.

Ok yeah, after another listen to both, I think KL takes the lead over PL. Even if only for the super shitty Toodle-oo song. But ‘Parker’s Band’ is underrated gold.

Also, and you can’t deny this because Picco and I had the same realization independently of each other, Your Gold Teeth II sounds EXACTLY like a Phish song from the ‘89-94 period.

"Parker's Band" kicks ass! Two drummers! The closest they ever got to the Fall!

I can't speak to the Phish bit, but I'll take your word for it.

For anyone curious, the tracklist for "Pretzel Scam" is:

"Rikki" / "Night by Night" / "Any Major Dude" / "Barrytown" / "Parker's Band" / "Through with Buzz"

b/w

"Kid Charlemagne" / "Caves of Altamira" / "Sign In Stranger" / "Green Earrings" / "Haitian Divorce"

Gaucho weirdly underrated by most. I guess because it's stretched out and more spare, more relaxed. Great record.
