I’m not a huge fan of opera, but when it’s great, it’s really something.

I mean, this:

AAAAAGH!!! MY EARS!!!

Captain Beefheart sounds like an unimaginative person’s idea of ‘weird music’.

Happened on a thread on Facebook years ago, in which a few Berklee College of Music sorts were going on about how Neil Young wasn't "that good of a guitarist" and was "more of a songwriter than a musician." That was good for a laugh.

Doesn't matter when it was made, or who by, country music is moronic bollocks.
Yes

No.

I don't know about pioneering...but they are the most heavily sampled group in hip hop, or were for a while. In any case, they fucking rule. They were unique. One of my dreams is to drive the Autobahn listening to "Autobahn." Driving through the Sudtirol no soundtrack fit as well at Kraftwerk.

Curious why you think this.

Listening, perhaps. Have you attended one? It's quite a different experience. I don't own any recordings of opera, but offered tickets I'll go every time. I'd even pay if it was more affordable. But alas...it's not.

I feel similarly. Can't really stand opera, but the spectacle of seeing one performed live is a different experience. You need the to see it to appreciate the Gesamtkunstwerk, as Wagner put it.

It's a chore to listen to alone. Somebody took my wonderful, texturally, formally and harmonically rich, completely abstract, yet nuanced escape from reality and instead made it about jealous lovers, unfaithful wives, crusaders and other petty worldly bullshit. No thanks.

Led Zeppelin are the second most over-rated “classic” rock band. But it’s not even a close race, because The Doors are lapping the field.

That said, while the Velvet Underground are a seminal musical influence for me, I have to admit that they may at least be in the running for the bronze. (And the rationale for their reputation as a live band is something that utterly eludes me. Even notwithstanding the somnambulant, 40-minute renditions of “Sister Ray,” the Velvets are the only band I know of who unfailingly played all their songs slower live than on the recordings.)
