You probably mean capacitors, yes they can.losthighway wrote: Fri Jun 24, 2022 5:50 pm I had to move my guitar head/cab setup in the studio today. It was silent in there so I noticed that without the power cable plugged in or (obviously) the amp turned on I could hear a little hiss from the speaker when I plugged the speaker cable in.
At first I thought I was going mad and even turned the light off to see if I was just hearing a lightbulb. I proved it to myself by plugging and unplugging the speaker cable while my ear was next to the speaker.
I understand transformers can hold electricity long after the power is off. Is that what I'm hearing? We did have band practice last night.

832Yes. Thank you. That explains audible signal from an unpowered amp too, right?TylerDeadPine wrote: Fri Jun 24, 2022 7:01 pmYou probably mean capacitors, yes they can.losthighway wrote: Fri Jun 24, 2022 5:50 pm

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
833Unless you have some powered pedals and there's a weird ground situation, then yeah that would be my best guess - unless there was high enough powered radio nearby to excite the speaker at the same time as you plugging it in, that would be something. 834tl;dr: 2-channel powered PA speaker has one channel making a white/pink noise
Set up both rigs in the garage yesterday as they haven't been used in some time and figured better check 'em out again before hauling them to Chicago for the BBQ. Everything was fine for a few minutes but then one of the speakers started loudly generating white/pink noise (and it does not have this as an on-board function. This is a PRX-725 and the power module is pretty bare-bones.
I originally thought it was dirty control pot or channel selector switch not making good contact but adjusting volume or toggling the switch does not seem to affect the noise which occurs when nothing is plugged in. In fact turning the volume up on the power module smoothly increases the volume of the static as opposed to a dirty pot which you can hear the turning of the knob making the signal jump etc.
Fortunately I'm able to use channel 2 so we're covered for the BBQ. Still, this is weird right? Why would this come out of nowhere?
I'll do more testing over my lunch break.

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
835I would gather wacky jack problem (like a grounding contact on a jack not making connection) or an internal connection, like a ribbon cable having a bad contact - would open'er up, contact cleaner all the jacks/pins.Garth wrote: Mon Jun 27, 2022 8:01 am tl;dr: 2-channel powered PA speaker has one channel making a white/pink noise

Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
836Went out on my lunch break can't even get the amp module off the speaker FFS. I was thinking about taking the grills off for a respray anyway, maybe I'll remove the bottom speaker and come at it from the other direction. Sheesh.
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
837I've got one... A friend of mine's father just passed away and left him a number of guitars of various vintage. I'm not sure the full extent of everything but it does include a gold top Les Paul from the 50s. It has humbuckers in it so that puts it at 1957 or 1958. Said friend does not play guitar and will be selling some things, which I offered to help with. That one Les Paul is worth $60-80K if its a 57 and possibly more if its a 58. My question is how would you sell something like that? I know you can sell that direct through Reverb but does it seem risky to sell and ship such a high dollar item that way? Or would one be better just taking it to a really pro vintage instrument dealer who knows how to handle that kinda thing?
Re: Small questions that don't fit anywhere
838For that kind of money, I'd be more inclined to work with a dealer as a consignment sort of thing. They'll be better equipped to handle shipping issues or insurance claims if something goes south during the deal.

839And depending on the shop, they might already have potential buyers lined up so it won't even need to go up on the open market.Nate Dort wrote: Wed Jun 29, 2022 9:35 am For that kind of money, I'd be more inclined to work with a dealer as a consignment sort of thing.
