Why all the hate for Fire Walk With Me? Had that film come out after Mulholland Drive (rather than immediately following the series) I doubt it would be as universally loathed.

Hey, anyone know why every version of Lost Highway that I've tried to rent has been some awful, grainy (looks like it's been filtered through a cheese cloth), pan-and-scan version?

P.S. I've kind of warmed up to Lynch as of late.

It was a matter of expectations. Lynch fans expected it to be Twin Peaks only better, given the lack of TV content restrictions. It came off like a B-sides compilation... meandering, lots of one-off scenes, new characters that didn't integrate very well into the overall story. It just didn't feel the same. Also, the lack of TV restrictions ended up working against it. With no content off limits, it lost the dynamic between the squeaky clean and the terrifying that made season one so good.

That being said, the scene where Laura sees her dad walking jauntily out the front door -- and her reaction -- is truly great.

The documentary Lynch: One is worth a good hoot and a holler. It almost makes me want to revisit Inland Empire, though I highly doubt I'll be doing that anytime soon. Make the bad film go away!

It hurts me to say it, because especially in the documentary, you can see how much the movie means to him. Ugh, sorry Lynch. Not one of your better films.

Fire Walk With Me is one of my favorite Lynch films. Very, very underrated, and better than the best moments of the series.

I've been thinking about this movie a lot lately. Probably more of a visual/aural assault than even Mulholland Drive.

FWWM definitely needs a reappraisal.

From what I can tell, having done a lot of review surfing since I became reacquainted with Lynch's work, FWMM is generally held in much higher regard these days. Supposedly a big DVD rerelease has been held up by red tape for some time now.

I can see how Lynch could piss off or annoy lots of folks, but not many things make me happier than the first few episodes of Twin Peaks, or Blue Velvet, or The Straight Story.

A little overrated, sure. But not crap at all in my book.

I agree with this. Great movie on its own if you can forget about the series. Better perhaps if you do.

i think i'm in the few minority ( i feel like im the only one in the country sometimes ) that doesn't care much for lynch's output.
i liked a straight story.
i liked blue velvet too.
mulholland drive was a meh.
wild at heart is a pile of horseshit.
eraserhead, a meh too.
basically, i think his outputs it's full of tics and cliches all the time. it's like watching a stupid comedy movie for teenagers, you know that somebody something completely OH SO FUCKING WEIRD AND FUCKED UP will happen, all the actors, all the strange sex acts, all the kitsch involved in some scenes, all the fake stupid mysticism (oh the old man at the end of the mulholland.. he should explain everything!) and that stuff. i just don't get it.
but yeah everybody who i knows thinks that LYNCH = GOD and if i see a movie with them and i don't think it was TOTALLY AWESOME they give me nasty stares.

*shrugs*
so yeah, i'm a pussy.
