for a week now i've been in the process of transferring my CDs to mp3s and apple lossless audio files. after plowing through all the obvious gems, i've started sifting through some of the more spotty recordings in my collection -- stuff i would've gotten rid of years ago if it weren't for a couple good tracks here and there or some sort of nostalgia value.
yesterday, i put in Superunknown, which i liked a lot when i was fourteen and fifteen. and after giving it an honest listen, i must say, on the whole, i think Soundgarden made pretty crappy music (this is afterall one of their better albums).
i guess what put me off the most was the lyrics. quite simply, i never realized what a bad lyricist Chris Cornell is. and since the vocals are so prominant, the bad writing is pretty hard to ignore. some of the songs were fuckin' cringeworthy ("Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman" come to mind --- just dreadful). but that being said, there were about seven tracks that i thought were pretty okay. "4th of July" and "Head Down" are very good songs in fact.
so... i guess i'm gonna have to vote CRAP
7.
Soundgarden sucks, but not as much as Abba.
