alex maiolo wrote:I think starting with the basics is always good, so maybe you should pick up the Nuggets II box set. Nuggets I is good, but II, which is mainly British, covers the ground as Mod moved into Psych. That period is often refered to a Freak Beat, and it's fantastic stuff. Bands like The Monks. Rock music gone terribly wrong, due to chemicals.

Bump for this compilation, or the foreshortened 27 song CD version a friend has just given me. My mind has been blown by it.

If that's the case then PLEASE get the full set. Some of the very best stuff didn't make the 27 because they wanted to keep the styles mixed up.

While you're at it, get Nuggets I.
This is where I put in my monthly plug for the Del-vettes some on that compilation. Wow!

Thanks Alex. I will put those on my list for when the Christmas splurge has cleared.

I have. I dig him/them, though it can sometimes get a little too dreamy and completely lose me. I like the odd textures though.

I'll also use this thread to spam a couple of music blogs I really dig that often feature late 60s and early 70s heavy psychedelia.

That second one belongs to a Chicago vinyl junkie friend of mine, and he regularly features outstanding rarities and gems. Worth checking out.

I don't expect most people to like this, but I think this decidedly fishy Hillage album is face-meltingly excellent. Although, you may have to suspend your cynicism to enjoy it. Has a similar feel to Hawkwind's Space Ritual. Fellow gong-head Tim Blake produced some other reasonable synth-based psychedelic side-projects as well.

If you're into Welsh Psychedelic folk rock...rereleased on AkArma, same folks that have been putting out all the 13th floor records. Pretty good, esp. if you're not too interested in comprehensible lyrics. And Nest Llywelyn? Aeold gwadd.

Silver Apples-Silver Apples is by far their most psychedelic release. neat stuff!

Also try to avoid any band with the word Psychedelic in their name, i.e. the Psychedelic Psouls. weak sauce.

There's this late 60's band from Boston called the Beacon Street Union. I have no idea whether these albums have been re-released, but they stand up there with the Chocolate Watchband and the 13th Floor Elevators. They were part of the MGM stable of psych-bands that were dropped once Mike Curb got ahold of the label.
