God, I'm begging this forum to stop writing about sports.

Please.

Stop.

I agree with you somewhat, but dogfighting is still cruel and unusual in that it serves no purpose whatsoever. That's not saying it's moral to eat steak but immoral to have dogfights (your argument is more complex than that). Maybe the little bunnies dying for revlon cosmetics don't serve a purpose, but you get my gist.

There's a scale of sadism here. Dogfighting is pretty high up there. These are pets for chrissakes. And there's the fact that Vick is an NFL superstar and a role model. He should be lambasted if he's guilty. He should serve time in jail.

Although I understand why some feel the guy is being singled-out because he's african-american, this is way off. This is an animal cruelty case perpetrated by some jock who should know better.

Fuck him.

By the way, Michael Vick is a piece of shit.

I get it. You have a dark-skinned, over-compensated athlete who got caught doing something deplorable. Unfortunately, for some individuals his crimes have allowed well-concealed feelings of racial hostility to be expressed as moral resentment and indignation. Viva America!

If Vick participated in this illegal activity he ought to pay the same price that anybody else would, regardless of ethnic heritage, celebrity status, performance on the football field or anything else.

Viva America!

John, you know that every single one of them there factors will come into play. He's already shorn his braids as to appear less of a pickaninny and more of a respectable young African-American male. Thank God he's not going to trial because then we would've had to sit through endless hours hearing about his special set of circumstances that molded him into this urban, unfeeling creature of terror. Race would come into factor as it always does, either subconsciously, or, as a defense-mechanism.

Well I don't deny that a person's upbringing has a lot to do with those kinds of attitudes.

I used to know a guy who bragged often about what a badass his dog was in the pit. Once I asked him how he could in good conscience put his dog into a fight to get injured and maybe killed. His reply was that the dog is tough, the dog was born and bred to fight, the dog wants to fight. So there's nothing wrong with letting the dog do what comes naturally to him and making some money off it.

He also used to say that fighting makes his dog stronger. He said that when he was a kid his dad wasn't around and his uncle used to beat up on him and force him to fight, and that made him stronger so he's just doing the same for his dog.

That justification came from a drug-addicted gangbanger and not a respected professional athlete, but I guess you can see how coming up in a rough environment can cause a person to lack empathy with others, especially animals.
