Richard Youngs' Advent. Fucking creepy as hell Minimalist noise record. Get the vinyl reissue on Jagjaguwar. You won't regret it.

Jim O'Rourke's "tape music" on the Tamper album is also pretty spooky. See "He Felt The Patient Memory of A Reluctant Sea." Even more spooky by him is his album of tabletop guitar, Remove The Need.

There's been a couple songs that have been able to give me a chill down my spine as an adult, but it's not a "scary" thing. It's more of a "wow". So I'm left with remembering the last time music was actually able to scare me, which was as a child. "Tainted Love" juxtaposed against a bootleg video (when it was a pretty new thing) of the movie The Beast Within, as a child. That made the song creepy for a while. The theme from Poltergeist, playing in the other room while I was trying to fall asleep as a child. Pink Floyd's "One of these days" playing in the other room while I was trying to fall asleep as a child.

That's about all I can remember as far as music actually scaring me, like actually giving me a feeling of fear.

Out of all the stuff mentioned on this thread that I've actually heard (Skinny Puppy, Suicide, Zeni Geva, etc) none of it even comes close to giving me a feeling of fear. Two of those three instill a feeling of ennui, actually. I don't think I have an active enough imagination anymore to be scared by something as mundane as music. I could probably be made to feel a sense of madness, or insanity, which is probably what I felt from the audio stuff that scared me as a child. But that doesn't induce fear at this point. Not at 33 years old.

I must say though, that the Fantomas cover of the theme from Rosemary's Baby almost comes close to being scary, but only the very beginning where the vocals sound like samples played via keyboard rather than being sung. As soon as Patton's voice actually sounds like Patton singing, any sense of scariness is replaced by annoyance.

If you're nervous listening to it, try playing it sometime.

I think Symphony 2 is the creepiest one. I think Branca's stuff is scary in a way that's overwhelming and powerful and I can't think of many types of music like that really. Somethings, like Black Metal, can be scary because they use signifiers to make you think of other things that are creepy like a film for example. Sun City Girls can be scary (good call whoever said that) because it feels alien somehow. Branca's music can be scary just because of the sheer force of it all.

Burun - something tells me it might not be quite as scary in the picturesque surroundings of Rome in a few weeks. That said, the amp hire prices are high enough to make anyone shit themselves.

I've posted this interview elsewhere, but here there is a nice relevance to the following quote:

Rick Bishop wrote:I'll always be a fan of vinyl, though CDs are a necessary evil. I'll also always be a fan of evil.

I don't think that he is just joking. I salute the Sun City Girls and their appreciation of the sinister.

This is, by far, my favorite Branca piece.

Burun, you played on this? I am totally impressed.

"Heathen Earth" by TG is pretty scary.

So is "Total War" by Boyd Rice.
