Apart from the lousy drum machine sounds therein, Loveless is a remarkable album.

Most of this thread sounds like fourteen year-old kids whining about their parents. The genius that gave birth to everything that we listen to today is easy to write off. The Minutemen, Joy Division, and The Stones assisted in developing almost everything that we enjoy today.
It's easy for us to experience music within our own context. I don't rock-out to a lot of the albums mentioned in this thread but I certainly have a healthy admiration and respect for almost all of them.

Title of thread - "Critically lauded albums that do nothing for you"
The thread "Bands and albums that you are bullied into liking because they are influential" is next door.

The music written in cruneiform in Ur around 4000 BC, although the first music ever written and thus a direct ancestor of Lungfish, is total horseshit. They mixed the vocals way too loud and overcompressed the drums.

I know that. I was disagreeing with the thread, in general.

What about it do you disagree with? The idea that critically lauded albums can be disliked? I don't mean to be argumentative. I just don't understand.

I think the thread is valid, it's interesting to note what records are one man's junk and another man's treasure. A sacred cow for some gives others a pain in the ass.
I really like the Replacements, but I can see how someone could really despise them, especially after hearing Westerberg's solo stuff.
I also like Sgt. Pepper's, I think that it was a landmark record and I actually hadn't listened to it as much as some Beatles records until recently. After giving it some airtime I decided it was pretty great. I can also see how someone else could really hate that one.
Taste is funny like that.

Most of Sonic Youth
Pavement
Swans' Children of God and everything after
Slint
Buzzcocks
My Bloody Valentine
Black Flag
Led Zeppelin
Radiohead
Pink Floyd
Most psychedelic/lava lamp bands
Jesu, minor but they suck and I haven't seen one person trash it.
Although I love everything by Joy Division, I can see how their popularity is way over bands that need the same recognition too.
probably lots of shit.

Gang of Four. I've tried over and over again over the years, and they still leave me totally cold. I also don't care much for Joy Division.
Metal Box
I have a feeling that, on some morning, I'll wake up with an appreciation of The Band, but at this stage in my life, they don't do much for me.
Pretty much everything by Steely Dan. I don't think I'll ever wake up with an appreciation for them.

Has anyone mentioned Bob Dylan?
Bob Dylan.
