"nuttmegalomaniac" and "when problems arise" by fishbone
"my name is mud" by primus (i hear bassists try to play this and no one can make it sound 1/10 as good -- heavy as hell)
anything by ruins with hisashi sasaki
pak (new album "motel" is nuts)
"barbarism begins at home" by the smiths
"for the love of money" by the o'jays
many james jamerson basslines
"inner city blues" by marvin gaye (bassist: bob babbitt)
"ain't no stopping us now" mcfadden and whitehead
"the groove line" and others by heatwave (i like the chorus pedal)
"relax" and "cashing objections" by bobby conn
"sexx laws" by beck (there are parts where the bass player is going crazy)
"thela hun ginjeet" "vroom" "starless" and many other king crimson songs
many uz jsme doma songs
"born under punches" and "air" by talking heads
"i want you (she's so heavy)" by the beatles
"annihilation II" by dysrhythmia
there are probably great time of orchids and sleepytime gorilla museum basslines but they are such integrated ensembles that the bass doesn't leap out at me
i like the bass outro at the end of "salad days" by cheer accident
anything by cause for effect (this band rules: http://listen.to/cfe)
word to haitian fight song and no means no. wooten is outrageously skilled and a great entertainer but he's kind of a different category. his brother regi is insane to watch live.

92...7 pages in and no one has mentioned "Carjack Fairy" by the Cherubs. So what if it's recorded in the red? So what if the bass (blows out? drops out?) halfway through the song only to stagger back in later? Who cares if it's just two notes long.
It conjurs up this lovely image of braless dominatrix go-go dancers having a massive back that ass up contest in the mud. What more could you want?
"Heroin Man" (also by The Cherubs) is good too.
Glad to see that Gang of Four and Jesus Lizard have been getting their nods, surprised to see Mike Watt only mentioned once ("Brave Captain" not good enough for you? Double Nickels on the Dime anyone?)
Too be quite honest, there are so many good bass lines out there one could do this all day. "One Step Beyond" by Madness", "Run" by Spiritualized, "Kaminari One" by Guitar Wolf (R.I.P. Billy), "Magnificent Seven" by the Clash (don't think anyone mentioned that one. That's kind of sad. "Rock the Casbah" is good too.), second track of side 2 of Swervedriver's album "Raise" (title escapes me), "I Believe in Miracles" by the Jackson Sisters, just about anything Motown or Phil Spector ("Can't Hurry Love" by the Supremes, "Be my Baby" by the Ronnettes, etc.), anything by Mingus, that opening lick to "A Love Supreme" by Coltrane, "Thinner, Stronger" by the Poster Children, "Sappukei" by Number Girl, the whole first Violent Femmes album (why wasn't that mentioned earlier?), "Frogs" by the Flaming Lips (which is almost the same as "She bangs the Drums" the Stone Roses) I also like "Mountainside" quite a bit there, "The Cutter" by Echo and the Bunnymen, "Love Explosion" by the Grifters (or maybe "Black Fuel Incinerator" or "Mambo King" instead), "Bellbottoms" by JSBX (yeah, yeah, I know... no bass... whatever), "Big Mouth Strikes Again" by the Smiths, "Bobs yer Uncle" by Happy Mondays, countless reggae albums and songs ("Spongee Reggae" by Black Uhuru, "Mission Impossible" by the Viceroys(?), etc.) a little of this, a little of that...
...it never ends... but I'm going to go with the simple pleasures. Lots of loud noisy bass... so "Carjack Fairy" by the Cherubs is going to be my addition to this list.
...what was the question again?

I would definitely have to agree with that.
Foxton plays a good bass on most Jam records.

95"Stryc Nine" by the One Inch Punch
I'm sure most people here haven't heard of them, but you should. They're not a band anymore, but two of the three members are now in Warhammer 48K, who is even more badassed.

99Crown of Creation by Jefferson Airplane.
No one was doing things quite like that on bass guitar at the time. The chords, overdrive/ feedback and he's just walking with everything. He's all over the place playing fat and distorted really sinister sounding stuff and then 1:51 into the song he plays this never ending descending line that seems like it will...well, never end.
It's been one of my favorites for quite some time.
I also second the all the James Jamerson stuff but would like to especially point out Standing in the Shadows of Love and Reach Out I'll be There from the Four Tops. Some of the meanest most intense stuff ever.
