I saw Neurosis only once, circa Times of Grace, so about 1999 or 2000. It was in the basement of the Eagles Ballroom, whatever they call that venue (I honestly can't remember). I knew nothing about the band beforehand but attended the show at a friend's behest. The music was very good. Since then, I've tended to view doom metal wherein the band members play the same chord over and over kinda passé, in large part because I can do that to good effect without even leaving my room (minus drums and bass of course). And you know, in case you haven't noticed, there's been an excess of Recession Rock over the past 10-15 years, and I've grown cold toward most of it. A lot of newer rock music in general isn't what I necessarily seek out. I don't know if Neurosis is categorized as doom metal per se, by most of its fans, but the sounds at hands were bracing and dynamic. It was proper heavy stuff. Not headache-inducing but elemental, music I'm not predisposed toward but couldn't help but like. I like it in the same way that I like Lungfish, who I've also seen but didn't appreciate at first--it's convincing enough in its worldview and execution to sidestep any hangups related to genre. There's a soundtrack-y composer I started listening to several weeks back, the late Marcus Fjellström, whose music is the same way: not normally my thing but interesting, hard to tune out.
