Not sure who John is thinking of but Goose definitely hit some of that in a jam band perspective, and the dumb looking/sounding bass and guitar help with the smooth fusion thing:

I love the Syd era. After that I only really dig the songs not sung by Gilmour. Have a Cigar, Nobody Home, Thin Ice, Brain Damage, ABIW Part 1.

Most of that was just Polyphia, Periphery and Mars Volta wannabe shit. But Snarky Puppy sounds like fucking Weather Report (and that name...)!

Some of it delves into the realm of djent metal as well.
