I saw them play five or six times, out on the West Coast.
David Yow never did anything particularly craaazeee, that I remember. But I was mostly ignoring him and watching the band.
The band always played with a near-frightening precision. I could never detect any in-song cues given amongst any of the musicians. No eye contact at all, really. They just knew the songs about as thoroughly as any person can know any thing.
This made a big impression on me. Also, the fact that Duane Denison could play heavy music in a heavy band without a "heavy" (i.e. severely distorted) guitar sound.
I was never interested in owning any of their records.

Huh?
Those first three or four albums are consistently terrific. If you loved them in a live setting, I think you'd enjoy the albums as well. If you're not aware, Steve Albini (the owner of this internet forum and of Electrical Audio) recorded everything by the Jesus Lizard up to and including DOWN. And because of Steve's recording style, the albums really sound like a live band playing in your living room.
I think they're the best records that Steve has ever worked on. The playing is tight and Yow's vocals are unhinged. You should really check them out.

i honestly can't understand how i didn't pick up on this band when they were touring. Goat is maybe my favorite record in the world right now.
that ts-50 gritty bass, dennison's noisy ass texturing, the way steve captured Yow's vocals, on the whole album but especially on Seasick, it sounds like he's in a sinking sub. just fucking amazing.

Has anyone seen the new dvd? More importantly, has anyone seen the interview following the show on it? Just curious.

Just listened to Liar again the other day. Hot damn. Duane Denison played some crazy stuff, I still can't figure out some of the combinations he was doing. Insane. On "Whirl" it sounds like he's playing several different things at the same time--the way it's layered is incredible.
They're one of the few bands I used to listen to religiously that I still pull out on a semi-regular basis.

Clearly NOT CRAP.
Grabbed a copy of Goat (always had the tape, just got the vinyl) because I busted out the tape and it was fluttering. The vinyl copy I bought has grooves that are barely deep enough to hold the needle. Piece of shit vinyl, I say.

Jesus Lizard and Shellac will oft be compared to each other, because they are so good there's little else to hold them to. Not Crap at all, but please somebody invent a new sound so the poseurs can finally find somebody else to steal from.

I guess you have a point.
Will I get "kerbled" if I say that the term
experimental is grossly overused?
