Does it really come down to whoever sees it first, or more accurately rather, whoever sees it and then talks about it here first? That seems kinda ridiculous.
If you're talking about asking for cooperating while being totally prepared for someone else to say "no, I'll be bidding too", and you're just about sharing info, then that seems reasonable.
If you really wanna bid on something, I'd say your best bet is to *not* talk about it here at all, and just put in your maximum bid, and if you don't win it then... you didn't win it. That's how it goes.
I picked something up a while back from eBay that I was deathly afraid somebody here would outbid me on, and it's a fairly uncommon item. Lucky for me it didn't work out like that, and I got it for a great price. If I mentioned it here, I expect that I would have paid easily $50 more, maybe $100, at which point I would have been outbid and not even bought it. I thought about posting here "please don't bid on this" but only had to think about it for about a minute before I came to the conclusion that would be a bad idea.
There have been things posted in this thread that I was already watching. If I was very intent on bidding, if somebody here said "hey, I'm bidding so don't", the only way I would take that into account is if it's something I already had one of and was looking for a second one just as a backup.
I guess what I'm saying is, as far as the idea of saying "I got dibs", I wouldn't even try doing it because I would never expect it to hold any weight. Maybe if one person is like "I need this terribly bad and it's my only chance" and another guy is like "yeah, I don't really care so much but I'm just gonna buy it for the hell of it" then the dibs thing *should* come into play. But otherwise, I don't think it's a reasonable idea to even hope for it to actually work. It seems like in many situations, it would be overly-idealistic and not even a particulraly fair thing.
I just don't post things here that I'm after. I'm a selfish bastard.
