Why would I give up a single friend or family member because of politics? I'm a believer in the Twain/Carlin/MacDonald model. We can help each other more than any politician can. If you want to talk, we can talk. If you want to argue, you have to have thick skin. And even then, I'll try to be nice. Because love is more important than politics.
This works well when we disagree about tax rates, foreign policy or regulations. Not so easy when you have someone questioning your identity as a human being. To be generous, one could claim that transphobia isn't even political, just religious persecution, but there's too much policy around it for it not to be a political conversation if either party is invested. Right now there is a creeping fascist wing that is very much making it a political issue so humanists and anyone vaguely antifascist needs to show up to that conversation which might mean telling Uncle Jim to fuck off with his hateful bullshit.

Yeah, plus those people are insufferable. People who at one point fell under the "why does everything need to be political" banner now have a meltdown every time Disney issues a press release.. why bother with their bullshit if you don't have to.

It's frustrating that the people who warn about how bad another trump presidency would be think the best way to defeat him is Joe F'kin Biden.
2016: Worst two candidates in the history of voting run for president.
2020: Hold my beer.
2024: Keep holding, I'm not done yet.
Seriously, get some decent candidates or you risk losing because people vote third party.

Well, if that family member is actively arguing for the suffering/abuse/dehumanization of your kids/sibling/close friends, etc, then their politics are a pretty good reason to end a relationship with them I'd say.
that could be political
or it could be just an awkward person who has less brain power than you and doesn't understand how they have been manipulated by the system.
the bottom line is they need your help if they have truly gone off the deep end.

When a relative says that my daughter isn’t actually a lesbian, she’s just doing it for attention, and it’s just a phase she’ll grow out of…. the decision becomes pretty clear: stop that shit or we’re done.

sure, but is that really a political disagreement or someone who doesn't understand basic human decency?
