you'd pay a hell of a lot more TO live in california.

not any more than I pay to live in Chicago

What does rent go for around where you live?

There is an studio apartment next to my house that is currently renting for $1650. I have been in there, it's very small.

A studio? I couldn't even fit all my shoes in this box of an apartment next door!

We pay $900 with no utilities included for our 1-bedroom (small-to-medium size kitchen, bedroom with closet, tiny bathroom, small living room, dining room big enough for a two-person table, garage space). That's a really good deal considering our neighbourhood and location.

However, it's really the cost of living that gets you out here. $4.70 for fuel in SF, $2 more for everything than what you'd pay in the Midwest (milk was five bucks a gallon a few weeks back), double the cost of going out, etc. I'm looking at a job in SF proper at the moment and it'll cost me $7-10 each day just to get to the job with train and bus fare.

Also, I swear to god that the price of tomatoes just went up now that they're in season. What the hell? I don't understand why produce that is probably grown here in California is more expensive than it was when I was in Wisconsin last week.

We pay more in California for everything because we are stupid. I blame the sun. (and the plastic surgeons, but that's another story)

You live in Alameda, don't you? If so, I am surprised at how little rent you are paying. Some friends of mine live up there (please don't ask me where because I don't remember off hand) and bought a house for close to a million a few years back. The house was nothing special, just a house on a small lot of land. Last time I spoke to Phil, it had just been appraised for close to $1.5.
San Francisco is even worse.

If I commuted to L.A. from where I live, I would easily spend 2 hours in my truck each way. Four extra hours that I would not be getting paid for, plus gas. Taking the metro would set me back about $10 a day I think, but getting to the train station from my house would take me about 45 minutes or so.

So yeah, California sucks. If anyone is thinking about moving here, please don't.

(Note to self: go to Midwest and eat lots of food.)
