Vanessa Carlton - Love is an Art
This is a good album. Looking through her catalogue, it tends toward the safe and unremarkable. Every once in a while something happens that makes me go "oh, that was cool". Like
Carousel which starts in a very typical way but then ooh what's that? That's awesome. The pre-chorus of
Nolita Fairytale is also neat.
The music seems to progress toward a more mysterious and sombre atmosphere over time, with more interesting songs. Her singing also moves away from the teen-pop feel of the early years.
There's some great songcraft and arrangements here. Companion Star, Back to Life, Salesman, Die Dino Die - all good. The Only Way to Love - superb.
Will be cool to see where this goes.
