So not crap. One of the best bands I've seen/heard in my life. I saw them play at least 10 times back in the day. Great band. I loved the tape recorder "sampling" stuff they did. Just tape recorders with on/off footswitches... I saw them on an off night, and they were playing tape stuff that went with different songs, but hey... that was one time.

Yeah, definately one of the greatest bands ever. When grungy sort of stuff was popular, they presented an intelligent, art-rock alternative to the alternative.

My faves are: "The Miracle of Sound In Motion", "Lurch/Butterfly Love" (it used to be on one CD), and "Tulip".

Yeah... Great, great, fantastic, wonderful band. Nice guys too. Wish they would get back together! I'm shocked that there's only 3 posts about them. I guess they're more known in Cali than the rest of the nation.

Steel Pole Bathtub to me were like Trenchmouth for this reason... They were a band of very very funny guys... Hilariously funny guys (like Trenchmouth) yet their show was not funny at all. As much as both bands rocked, I often times would rather hear them be funny than rock.

Am I a bad person for feeling that way?

i had one of their albums and sold it after like a week and i barely remember what it sounds like other than the sounds of disappointment...i still have that split 7" with Unwound...i haven't listened to it in forever...i forget what that sounds like too though i recall not too bad since that was my motive for getting their album...but since now there's an Unwound singles comp and i don't have a working record player anyway, i haven't had much reason to jog my memory...

i don't think you're bad, mayfair. you just have SPB confused with Paul Rodriguez. it's a more common mistake than you might expect. i mean, uh, it's happens to all guys at some point?

NC. i love miracle of sound in motion. great record - great band. i've actually been pulling that out a lot in the last 6 months and it's aweseome to think all of that stuff was done pre pro tools. all that wierd sampling shit - but not in the traditional sampler kind of way. goes sorta in hand w/ cop shoot cop - rock bands using samplers - but i think in the end i like SPBT more than CSC.

but - i never saw em live sadly.

Yeah, Miracle is my favorite, by far. The opener is about abusing cold medicine. Yeah, I consider myself very lucky to have seen them as many times as I did, back in the day. After almost 15 years of seeing other bands, not many have impressed me as much as SPBT.

I once told Darren that he is my hero, and he said thanks and he noticed that I enjoyed their set. I meant it... Great fucking band. One of the greatest "indie" bands of all time. I'd add Cheer-Ax to that very short list as well...

That was all done live too. They had these regular tape recorders and they had these on/off switches they could operate with their feet. Both Dale and Mike used these. For a 3 piece band, they could really make a joyful (and fearful) noise.

The first time I saw them, they opened for Mudhoney. I had taken 2 tabs of a certain thing... The tape sampling stuff really freaked me out, because I didn't know how they did it. It was the first time I had ever experienced them. I instantly felt they were the best band ever, and I still really like them to this day.

Never got the "unlistenable" album, but I plan to someday.

Yeah... listening to The Miracle of Sound in Motion right now. Haven't played this in about a year. So fucking cool. This is an album you can listen to from start to finish, and every song is just so amazing.

The cover of the Pogues "Down all the Days" is brilliant.

"Exhale" and "Thumbnail" are my faves...

These guys make me so proud of the bay area, and also remind me that we used to have a great rock scene. Now it's all DJ-so-and-so with so-and-so on tablas or some other world music percussion...
