Pro37 vs. Pro37R

I searched and searched, but I couldnt find any dicussion comparing these two similar AT mics on EA.

I ordered some Pro37Rs (no longer produced) from 8th St. Music, thinking they might have been old stock, and instead received Pro37s, which I suppose should have been foreseeable. Should I be upset? Are they the same mic with a slightly different badge? The information on the AT website would seem to indicate this, but I'd like the opinions of any EA folks with experience with both mics to back that up.

AT website on Pro 37 R (a pdf)

AT website on Pro 37 (not a pdf)

Thanks.

The specs appear to be exactly the same - that would strongly suggest that it is pretty much the same mic.

I wouldn't worry about it.

On a side note, why do so many people like these? The specs don't look great for a condenser - do they just simply have a good sound?

Yeah I am very interested in purchasing a pair of these but I can't seem to find much in for on them. Most people seem to like them on folky string instruments (which is enticing for me because I am going to record a bluegrass band soon). How do they sound on other applications, like drum overheads?

i really like the pro37r that we have. i actually wish we had a few of them because there are different applications that i like to use it on. i will say that it doesn't handle high spl all that well which is the one and only bummer for me with this mic. but for about $100-150 you really can't got wrong buying one or two. plus they are so small and sexy looking.

it's actually really great as a trashy overhead.

Could you do me a favor and buy a Pro37 and then compare the two and write about it on this thread? Thanks.

Anyone else? Comparison? Etc?

I just got a pair on musician's friend, i think they were $120 each. I used one as a mono overhead and it was somewhat harsh sounding (i'm used to using akg 451s) but I could see where it would sound really cool if you want that trashy metallic sound, with the cymbals really breaking up. haven't tried it on anything else yet.

I, too, got a pair of 37s from 8th Street, thinking they'd be 37Rs. They were on sale at the time, $90 each, so I wasn't too broken up about the missing Rs.

Anyway, I love them, particularly for acoustic guitar. I've also used them as drum overheads, and with mixed results on a guitar amp and vocals. I wouldn't really describe them as trashy, but that's probably because my whole studio is trashy. They sound pretty ... honest? ... to me.

I couldn't believe how small they are when I opened the box. I kind of wish all mics were their size.
