It's the one with the cylinder that you place on the center of the record as it plays (I believe at 78 RPM, if memory serves corectly...). Then you listen to the record, hang a light bulb in the center of the tube, and the openings in the side of the tube are supposed to put you in to some kind of lsd-like "zone".
I think I remember reading that some company makes a "viewmaster" looking device that has little shutters on it that are supposed to induce the same type of effect.
You're joking, right?
Anyway, I just got the new thing with Jónsi Birgisson (singer from Sigor Ros) on it and it's quite nice but I don't hear any singing or anything. I can only assume they vocals or words or whatever are so processed that you can't really differentiate them from the drones.

It's called a dreammachine. Invented by 'the only man [William Burroughs] ever respected". Brion Gysin. The halfer album is The Man Who Tried to Disappear, i think.
Supposedly the light passing through the revolving perforated cylinder flashes at frequencies to match what scientists call Alpha waves. These have something to do with something interesting. I tried to build a dreammachine once, you generally need a 75 rpm turntable, which i bought for $5. My hand-cut construction-paper cylinder turned out crappy and i didnt have a totally dark room to try it in. But one day, I will find the time to waste on this.

I got Exactly As I Do today, which is one of three things he did with Jonsi.
I haven't listened to it yet, but the packaging is way cool.
I find the stuff on his webpage a little...offputting.

I think good packaging is where Hafler Trio shines. Their music never really lives up to it.

What, like this?
I will approve of any review of my work where the reviewer has:
a) considered the intent of the release
b) has it succeed in those aims
c) sought personal contact of anything is unclear to them
