For the longest I've wondered how the regenerative echo effect was created for the guitar part played at :46 into the song and pans around the stereo image. Any ideas or actual ways it was done?

Bob discussed this once on the Shellac list. The first series of echos which are fading out, is just a delay applied to the guitar. The fading in echos are a delay applied to the guitar while running the tape backwards.
It's fun having a tape machine that will operate backwards.
