You play guitar. You're a pretty good, creative guitar player. You're a vocalist too, sometimes, but that's about it.

But you like to fuck around on the drums at practice. Before too long, you're no longer god-awful at the drums, but you're still pretty bad. However, you're fortunate enough to be a pretty good musician in general, and you will improve.

You join a band that's just starting out, because you want to play the drums. The band is not nearly as well-developed as the band you play guitar and sing for. But dammit, you want to play the drums!

is a crappy waste of time? or is worth it?

---

I have a friend who, when I once told him I liked playing the drums, said, "No... don't do that. You're a guitar player. Don't try to be a drummer."

But I disagree. Playing drums for me is like being 15 again, when I could barely tell good music from total garbage, and I sure as hell didn't know how to play good music but loved every second of the naivete.

The best drummer i've ever played with was a guitarist... and an amazing drummer... SOOOOO FANTASTIC! On his bands recordings he often played all the instruments due to the fact he was more proficient than anyone else in the band and could get the tracking time to a minimum. Totaly not crap.

Not Crap, gio! I did almost exactly this, except I had moved to a new town and didn't tell people I was a guitar player, I acted like I was a drummer. Yeah, they caught on quick, as I sucked ass on drums, but it was fun as hell and I truly miss it. Learning drums should only improve your ability to play guitar with a drummer as well. Totally go for it!

im voting not crap. people arent defined by what they do so branching out to other instruments is agood stepp. i play guitar in superpussy and play drums in another band called cocina. playing other things also helps with creating music. get a better understanding of how instruments can lock together and compliment each other. it gives you or more holistic look into it. that sounds kinda wanky dont it

Brokaw in The New Year: not crap

Kadane in Consonant: um...he certainly knows the value of three guitars, so maybe he should pick one up and Consonant can be percussionless. Really, he's one of my favorite songwriters, but he ought to ease up on the crash cymbal a bit.
