Did you just see 'em live? They played last night here in louisville, I wanted to go but didn't. If so, how was it?

Saw them at Double Door a couple years back opening for High on Fire.
One of the great experiences (and only one of a few as of late) where everyone, myself & friends included, were there to see HoF, and when Mastodon started, you could see all the heads in the packed house whip around and lock on what they were doing. All I could think of at the time was "Speed metal with filtered through a jazz sense of meter." Fantastic.
The vocals on the recordings, as opposed to live, hit more in that uber-growl range of black metal, but still the records are great.
Not fucking crap.

Standing alongside the monkey at the time, I too was mesmerized by this band. It had been a while since I'd witnessed such an intense showing, and nobody has topped them so far. I concur on the death-metal growl vocal stylings but the music pretty much makes up for it.

Mastodon fans could do a lot worse than to check out their drummer's old band, Lethargy. Mastodon minus the Chuck Berry, twice the prog. They have a 2 CD discography, you can find it pretty cheaply on many independent distros.
My jury's still out on Mastodon. Probably seeing them live would put them in NOT CRAP territory.

though i'm happy that they've been able to get recognized beyond the rediculously insular metal-core scene, i'm still gonna have to say crap.
-some of the riffs are cool, but the songs don't really coalesce in a way to make them greater than the sum of their parts/riffs (though this could be said about 99.9% of metal).
-over-repetition
-the drummer is amazing, but 'Remission' is basically a 45 minute triggered fill. gets annoying.
so yeah.

Just got Leviathan earlier tonight. Haven't listened to it yet, though. Saw them with High On Fire over two years ago and while they played well, the sound was so bad that it was almost unbearable. NOT CRAP as of the moment but I doubt that will change after I give the new one a spin.
