Long before getting into Skateboarding, and even longer before Music, I was obsessed with Ninjas, Kung Fu, and the various martial arts.

I was a mere child, younder than 10, and I was enrolled in Tae Kwon Do classes. But it was hard. Or boring. I never got to punch the wood in half, and i never made it past white belt.

Not too long after, i wanted a Mike McGill and a curb to break my elbow by.

Not crap... cause. Well. I dunno. It's neat?

I studied Tae Kwon Do for seven-and-a-half years and have a black belt in it,. I've found that it's not practical as a fighting style (just from thinking about it, I've never been in a fight) as much as it is a discpline. We learned a mix of other things (Hapkido, Judo throws, etc) mixed into the classes. I spent two years training for my black belt in a class with my friend Amanda, five 35-year-old second degree black belt cops and a plumber with a glass eye named JD who would instinctively kick you in the head if you got on his blind-side. It was great.

When my schedule frees up this year, I plan on starting over with a new school and working my way back up to my second black belt over the next decade. I'd really like to go to the Degerberg Academy on lincoln, as you have the option of learning stick-fighting (2 short sticks) once you've gotten orange belt status. I would love to learn how to whip the shit out of stuff with sticks.

stick fighting! so cool!

My friend, who's really into martial arts, has just started doing Systema. He says that it's kind of unusual and involves lots of grappling. You have to do things like smile, before you attack your opponent, in order to catch them off guard. Basically, it's fighting dirty. The guy who runs the class goes round smacking you on the arse with a whip, to keep you on your toes. It just sounds a bit scarey to me. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Not Crap.

In any event, Not Crap.

For that matter, why not marksmanship or bomb deployment.
My guess is that they were not developed in non-western countries. I'm not saying that this is a good reason, but I think it is the reason. They're not exotic enough to be a matrial art.

I suppose it depends on whom you think has the authority to say what is and what is not a martial art. Perhaps it's just your perception of consensus?

It is difficult to disassociate the phrase "martial arts" from the traditional concept of dudes in robes kicking at one another.

To me, wrestling, fencing, and similar hand-to-hand, one-on-one activities that are rooted in pugilism, are "martial arts," in the linguistically pure sense.
