Band-Comedy Duo: Tenacious D

I did the search, Kerble!!

......found nothing. If it already exists please point me in the right direction but I'll be damned.....

Anyway, I say Not Crap.

I remember hearing about them before I heard them and thought it sounded really stupid. In fact, I remember reading some blogger's heckling of them and I laughed the laugh of a dick.

However, someone gave me a song of theirs about City Hall (I can't remember the name) but it was well-written, well-played, and was really quite hilarious. I even owned the full-length with Dave Grohl drumming before my hard drive died but now it's gone.

IMO, their best material is the short-lived HBO series. Something about putting them into the situation comedy context made them about ten times funnier than in their albums and live performances.

Note: I would say the same of Jerry Seinfeld as well. I always despised his stand-up, but his series is arguably the funniest show ever made. Part of this is the situational context, I would argue, but another major part is Larry David's involvement.

The same joke...over an over. Crap.

Shows Jack Black to be disappointingly one-dimensional. School of Rock reinforced this. I was sorry to discover that because he is actually funny - for awhile.

Proves that every actor wants to be a rockstar and vice-versa. Dogstar, The Licks, etc, hear me: you wouldn;t have been given a contract if you hadn't been actors first. Remember that and you'll be fine.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinions, but a comparison to the Darkness?

Tenacious D is first and foremost a comedy act. The music is merely a vehicle for the comedy.

Anyone who pans TD without seeing the broader perspective of what they do has probably misunderstood what the point is.

That is, watch first their HBO series. That puts it in context. If your first exposure was the album or the DVD, you might think they're up to something different than they are.

Have you watched the HBO series? There are plenty of different jokes in the series. The album and the DVD make them out to be more unidimensional than the series do.

I feel for people whose only exposure to TD has been the album or the DVD. They're really not getting what it's all about. I know because I'd agree with you had I not seen the series. I'd probably think it was just some actors trying to make a buck by singing stupid sex joke songs, and cursing, and being fat, but that's really not the case.

I found the TV skits funny as I find Jack Black funny. I was in a band that opened for TD twice and they not translate at all to the concert setting... for me that is. The crowds loved them. Both times their draw was full of frat type males... very few women...lots of high fives... the crowds were so loud you couldn't even hear the 'comedy' anyway.

BTW Jack Black is hosting SNL tonight with musical guest Mr. Neil Young.

i agree that their co-option by drunken frat boys is less than appealing, as they are quite funny. as far as the music goes, i agree that it's not groundbreaking, but as was pointed out earlier, it's just a vehicle for the jokes. plus, it could be worse: they could be a comedy act singing exclusively over Shinedown and Staind background music.
if i got lasik surgery on one eye, i could wear a monacle.
