Not sure if this has been posted before ( I did a brief search and didn't find anything) but i'm just wondering if you guys do anything peculiar to change the tone of your guitar or to get a certain effect. I'm talking about stuff other than the "Sonic Youth insert something under this fret to get this" tuning tricks.
I was also wondering about the theory that more Headstock mass increases sustain. Is there any truth to that or is it just crazy jiba jabba?

2I have a trick which everyone abhors when I describe it, but you asked. Instead of a distortion pedal I plug my guitar into a simple tape deck unit with a blank tape in there, rec-play-pause pressed, and run the VU meter to 10, then out to amp. I'm told this wrecks any chance of tone but there sure is noise, and it sure feedbacks easily and mercilessly.
Oh wait, though, you asked about TONE, about doing stuff TO THE GUITAR. One time I made little tin foil cylinders and put them around every second string. That was an unusual recording.
I also have used Nashville tuning for non-acoustic songs - Nashville tuning, through a Big Muff...now THAT is an interesting sound! Don't want to build a whole set around it, but ...yeah.

3You could try using a penis pump to fatten up the guitar tone.

4Vibrating egg under or taped to the bridge. Works well with small finger sized personal vibrators also. The egg is nice (I assume it is designed to shove up your ass. It is about 3/4 of a inch long and about a 1/2 inch wide attached to a long wire with a remote control and battery on the end).It has a rate control so you can make it vibrate a lot or a little. Nice also in slides with silly putty.
Door buzzer can also be used with the hammer knocking on the bridge or keys. The wrapped magnet in door buzzer can make a emergency pick up for a one stringed instrument.
Esentially in tuning this technique rings the entire guitar causing endless sustain.
Another option is capoing to useful musical key and setting a guitar in tuneing and bungy cording it to the front of the speeker cabinet so that the head stock and body are in full contact and control the output with a seperate volume pedal directly into the amp on a seperate input to you regular guitar. It yields a rather exciting feedback and sustain sound similar to touching the headstock of your guitar to the cabinet while playing.which can be choked back with the volume pedal.

Thanks. What sort of Door buzzer and how should I mount it to the bridge?

6Check out this page the lower illistration shows the type of buzzer I am talking about

This explaines the internal workings of a buzzer. I thought this up after seeing skeleton Key one of the guitar players has a door knocker screwed into his guitar and he wacks on that to play it at times. I was installing a buzzer at my wifes workspace and that gave me the idea.
The buzzer costs about $3 at a hardware store that stocks them. I have also seen them in .99 stores that have a lot of hardware stuff. If you were useing it as a buzzer you would use a 6 volt latern battery but you can use less power or get a 4 aa clip pack at Radio shack with a switch to turn it on and off.
My You use tin snips or a hack saw to remove the bell, Take a lot of metal off because you want to position the hammer so it hits either the bottom bridge of the guitar or the tremilo block inside a strat. I mounted it with velco on the bottom because I just used it for some recording. But that is good as you can take it off and remove the velcro with goof off if nessessary. Wire the switch and then the battery and you are ready to go but you have to put some tape somewhere to deaden the hits or it sounds like a bell being hit and is real noisy.
I would check out the vibrator angle first it is less noisy and if you don't like it the vibrator might still come in handy for something later. You can use the cylinder shaped ones as slides too.

7The outside (remove the ink cartridge, or don't...I dunno, up to you) of a bic pen (pictured; yellow or transparent...whatever) dropped/wedged/taped twixt the bridge and back P/U so that it barely grazes the strings (works better on guitars with flat necks rather than curved for obvious reasons) gives some great sitar/odd harmonic effects.
