I'm about to go to mine. I can't be bothered.

Anyone actually enjoy them?

If you work with people you like, they can be very enjoyable. If you don't - like me - they can be truely insufferable. I try to miss any kind of social gathering that involves the people that I work with, but have found that by not going I open myself up to a world of shit. I get accused of not being a 'team player'! They doubt my dedication to the 'team'! They'd be fucking right, but that doesn't mean that I can't do my job!

About the only thing I've enjoyed about office parties I've been to has been the free booze.

Mine is also beginning in about 20 minutes. I really like most of the people I work with but I won't be in attendance mainly because of the choice of venue. It's always some weird, sterile corporate banqueting suite that is like a Christmas party farm - you can wander off (I have the one year I went) to an adjoining hall and watch a firm of accountants dancing to Nutbush City Limits. It was like I had died and was getting a disturbing glimpse of a life yet to come.

In a boisterous little restaurant or bar or even just having an easy-going DJ who will play stuff people will dance to without making every single record a ball-achingly obvious novelty that makes me want to stab myself in the cheek with a fork it could be an enjoyable evening. As it is it will be dismal food and the kind of forced jollity that makes me want to open a vein.

Plus every split second of it will be captured on digital camera and emailed around tomorrow.

Mine was last Wednesday - trendy club with bad music played way too loud - Copacabana wasn't funny the first time they played it - even less funny the second time

To break those uncomforatable moments I like to ask coworkers how they lost their virginity. You either get stunned looks (and a call from HR the next day) - or a funny story.

Mine is tomorrow and I'll be spending it with the young girl who sits next to me and discusses her virginity and her attempts to lose it with her boyfriend. I think he's gay (for various reasons) and am trying to convince her to dump him because he treats her like shit.

I try to be a gentleman, of sorts, but somehow the conversation today resulted in me, very politely, saying that if he wont go down on her I'll come round and show him how its done.

Such a strange relationship - colleagues. People you spend a third of your day with, you'll eventually tell each other everything yet you're not even friends by choice.

I found out at the christams party, at the university where I've just started working, that certain members have staff already have a nickname for me...'Captain Haddock'.

It could be worse, I guess.

I got drunk enough to end up dancing to 'Disco Inferno', draped head to foot in christmas decorations, with the girls from Admin and the gays from the Fashion Department.

What a mess.
