I think some gamelan music is played in a tuning close to piano and thus it should be possible, yes. There was a Radio 4 show relating to this the other day, do a search here for 'Colin McPhee' to find a link...

Or are you talking about the John Fahey tracks?

I use my Moogerfooger ring modulator and a rapid, muted picking technique to get pretty convincing gamelan sounds on a gtr.

One of my bandmates does this as well. I second Angus Jung's "pretty convincing."

The static/manual setting on a Deluxe Electric Mistress would be a cheaper option...

I think this is what Glenn Branca and Sonic Youth are doing using the tuneing and fundmental notes to create overtone series.

Elliot Sharp I think is also influenced by Gamealons in his percusive finger hammer style.
