Olive oil. No question.

Balsamic Vinegar - overrated. Half the time wine makes a better alternative.

Tomatoes - johnny-come-lately fruit. The best Italian cooks could get along just fine without it.

If I were to rank basil, it's come in after olive oil. Basil's lovely, but without olive oil, it loses much of its appeal and becomes essentially a weed.

Olive oil is the life's blood of italian cooking. whether used for sauteing or dipping.

everything else is just an ingredient.

Tomatoes - You are number one, in my so skewed sense of what makes the good Italian food! You are the most important to the taste, you and the sometimes cheeses. Number one yum!

Olive Oil - You are tasty. You are good sometimes! You are also important! Two!

Balsamic Vinegar - Yuck! Last!
