I bet that the production on their records irks some people here, but I quite enjoy their stuff, and I've a special fondness for Martsch's guitar tone.
After all, what else has come out of Boise, ID?

It's not the production, but the overall blandness that makes it CRAP for me. To me, there's not much happening.

Does Doug Martsch still live in Boise? I thought that I saw him at a video store the other day.

Yeah, I really don't like the production on ANYTHING Phil Ek has EVER done. Anyway, I DO like Built to Spill. Not Crap!

My uninformed opinion (based solely on my familiarity with There's Nothing Wrong With Love and Perfect from Now On) is NOT CRAP. Some songs on Nothing really hit it; some others less so. But Perfect really does it for me, all the way through. The playing, the tones, the subtle builds to crescendos, the alternating use of density and space arrangements, the whole bit. For some reason, it was a significant part of my personal soundtrack from 2002-2003.
Dunno about the quality of the albums since, but I gotta say NOT CRAP based on the achievements of those two albums.

at least one minor zine is saying they will break up. that would be a shame. keep it like a secret is one of the most charming records of my time. melodies and guitars above lyrics and attitude. works for me.
not crap

Perfect From Now On truly was a masterpiece. To me, it's up there with Loveless, Dark Side of the Moon, and others. Truly amazing and unique. It's more like sonic art than music at times. But I guess those 2 are pretty much the same anyways. Beautiful cascades of gorgeous noise. Amazing guitar, and adequate rhythmic support. A soundtrack for a lifetime.
Noooot Craaaap!
