Though he is lovely, Fred THOMAS (SLGTM's songwriter/lyricist) ain't female.
A few ladies happen to sing his lyrics on their records/live.
Their website is
here.

perhaps, i should ask, more specifically, who would you consider to be the female counterpart to bill callahan, as far as lyrics are considered? and then, it would also be appreciated, if you would list off other lady lyricists that you like, even if they have to be listed in descending order. thanks.

Well, I've seen them a few times, they have had the same woman eacht time. She doesn't sing on everything, but there is certainly a higher percentage of Lady words in Saturday Looks Good to Me than the Rock*a*Teens.
And yes. he is beautiful.

Jennie Benford from Jim & Jennie and the Pinetops
Catherine Irving from Freakwater (her record "cut yourself a switch" is great)
Rennie Sparks from The Handsome Family writes some great lyrics, though Brett Sparks sings them.
Gillian Welch is amazing
Scout Niblett
Peaches had been known to write some good lyrics on occasion.
Kim Deal, please make an album soon.

Catherine Irving from Freakwater
Catherine Irwin is one of the driest and funniest people I've had the pleasure of being around in the studio. She does write some interesting stuff, though hard rockin' isn't what I'd call most of her material. I dig her though...
