What do you guys think about going to college? I suppose I'm going to go. I just have no idea what I want to get out of it. I would like to start my own business one day and I don't see college being able to help me at all. I could go to business school, but it really just teaches everything I hate about business. I'll probably just go for recording and history. I still don't know, though.

Those of you who have been. How has it helped you and what do you do?

Those of you who haven't. What do you do and do you wish you had been?

I just don't like the idea of paying off a student loan and having to take out one for my business as well.

Do it. If your business flops, then you'll have a degree to fall back on. You can't do jack shit without a 4-year degree or at the least some technical training these days, and the people that do are very few and far between and usually have the benefit of nepotism or having the right connections. They are the exceptions rather than the rule. Take it from someone has not done the standard 4-year plan. Go to school and get that piece of paper. Don't worry about student loans. I see them as no different in principle than an auto loan or a mortgage or a small business because like them it is an investment in the future, plus the rates are often below the prime rate.

You might actually learn something if you go to the right school too while you're at it.

I went to college (Univ. of Wisconsin - Madison) for two years and dropped out. I never finished and currently don't have a degree. I have no regrets and have no intention of ever going back or finishing.

Currently I design and specify audiovisual systems for a technology consulting firm. I'm well paid. I enjoy what I do. No regrets, but it wasn't easy getting here. I did some boring-ass time as a CAD draftsman, an electrical designer and later a telecom infrastructure designer. In my example, experience counts for as much if not more than education.

If I were to have finished college...In hindsight, I might have majored in music theory and composition....possibly performance, though I don't think I really had/have the ability and discipline for that. I'd likely not be using it and doing the same thing I do now. I would not want to sit in a music faculty and go slogging for grants every year to write obtuse music for others to give a flying fuck less about.

I went to college. I liked it. I learned a lot. Also, I'm really excited about going to law school. It would be difficult to go to law school if I hadn't been to college. Maybe it wouldn't be impossible, but it would be more difficult.
Why do you make it so scary to post here.

obviously, college is a lot of money and if you'll be taking out loans.... i'd really think about it. i have wasted a lot of time in college and cash i could have better used on an endless supply of make up, giant televisions, and several 360's... right now i manage and invest in a cafe with two college graduates as minimum wage employees. i may be a bit of a schmuck occupationally, but i'm glad to know they are too. if you are in a position to go to a great college i guess you may as well start, but if you aren't even sure about that, i'd wait it out to think about what you want to do... most of my friends are in their mid 20s to early 30s and, of those who went to school, are all STILL conflicted with what they plan on doing with the degree (or in one case, 6 degrees after 12 years of piddling around as an undergrad). most have done nothing and are still delivering pizzas to pay off the loans. the people i do know who have succeeded with their education are lawyers or biologists of some kind. these days a bachelor doesn't get you much so unless you have a field in mind, think about it. college shouldn't be about the "experience" regardless of what anybody tells ya.

I went to college. Without having gone to college, I would never have the job I currently have.

I work at a college.

But I have an academic research job, so it's a pretty narrow 'college-only' type of job.

do you know what kind of business?
