Drum machines on Big Black records? Not a chance! If you listen closely, you'll hear that it is in fact a real drummer. He's playing the uber-rare Korg 5PAZ-0. It was a tiny box controlled with foot-pedals. The foot pedals controlled the synth-drum sounds. Unfortunately, in order to play it effectively you had to be under 5"6" and have arms the length of Marlborough Lights.

You know what makes me indignant beyond reason? The cost of a 303 or a 909 these days. For such a limited palette of sounds (albeit beautiful ones), the anal retentives who wax-nostalgic about rave and techno have led to those things being out of reach for the average musican.

Not sure what it was on the first few records. But it did end up being a Drumulator until the end.

LAB: What model did you use? I remember reading all the old tour diaries and you always referred to Roland in third person, as a member of the band.

SA: Well, in the earliest days it was a Roland TR-606, then later on it was an EMU systems Drumulator.

I think the 303 should make it onto the crap/not crap forum. I vote crap, because of the obsession they inspire in people that should know better.
