if you really wanna play chess against folks via the net, may i recommend www.ItsYourTurn.com to you? there's a handsome graphic interface and messaging system that make the game very managable. also, in addition to being able to conduct games specifically with friends or other known users, you can play against anyone at random. there are many other games as well. i mostly play stack 4 with my friends in missouri, boston, and chicago, because chess hurts my brane. good site, and it's free, too.
