Enclosures around mic acting as high pass

Has anyone ever tried putting a mic inside a box with a hole cut into it, maybe in a wavy rectangular shape to let in a range of high frequencies?
I got this idea when I listened to a mic that was turned on in an iso booth while a drummer played in the next room. The door to the iso booth was open about 4" and the sound reaching that mic was mostly cymbals and a little top-end from the skins.
So I want to figure out how I can predict what frequencies would come through different sizes and shapes.. someone must have tried this or something similar before.. anyone know of some books or websites that speak of such things?
Oh, and I'm thinking abouthooking up some speakers to use as microphones through the 1/4" inputs on my board. Is there any way this could hurt by board?
