I just got mine cut.

I think if you have to ask, you probably need one.

Good rule of thumb.

I always had this theory that I could date a girl for years and be happy as hell, but the day I introduce them to my parents we break up within three weeks. this theory has been proven true four times or so.
my brother told me he has the exact same thing happen when he gets a haircut.
when should you get a haircut? when you want to get rid of your old lady.

I cut my own with clippers and a 1/2" attachment, say every couple months.

Rule of thumb for cutting:

A) When it gets long enough that I actually have to smooth it down a bit when I wake up. If I have to pay attention to it, it gets cut.

B) When someone says, "Hey you're growing your hair out, I like it" - this is grounds for possibly shaving it bald.

C) Lice and/or scabbies. Haven't had either, but this would mean haircut, nerve gas and/or dermabrasion.

i generally cut my hair every day or two. i do it at home now, in the bathroom, with hair-cutting scissors, cause the traffic here is so light. i used to enjoy doing it in rush-hour traffic on the kennedy on my way home from work (o'hare to bucktown) using the scissors on my leatherman while driving with my knee. and throwing the cut hair out the window. obviously. if you cut your hair every day or two, just a couple snips here and there, you can have it look exactly the same for years and years. that way people never look at you funny cause your hair is too long, or make fun of you because you got a haircut.

so for "when to get a haircut", i'd say every day while you drive home from work.

I decided to grow my hair long like a rockstar and/or a filthy hippie. I've never had long hair so I'm not quite sure how it'll turn out yet. My mother doesn't like it but I've put so much time into not getting it cut that I feel it would be a waste if I got it cut now.

Although last year I did shave my head, on a bet, for fifty dollars, and the entertainment value inherent in shaving my head in front of a large group of people.

I've found that since I started getting my hair cut shorter, I have to keep cutting it to keep it short. My conclusion is that haircuts breed other haircuts. The simple solution is never to get one.

The movie 'Withnail & I' provides great advise as to getting to your hair cut. This my burned out ass trying to more or less paraphrase a scene from a film.

"That would be a very bad idea. All hairdressers are under the employment of the government."

Then the guy goes on to say that your hair allows you to converse with the universe or something like that. He then explains that's why bald men are so uptight. I'm too tired to make any sense. I apologise.

of course haircuts are really just a matter of taste? Do you like it long? Do you like it short? Do you like it bald, balding, combed over, etc. or perhaps any one of hundred of permutations of the mullet.

My personal barometer has been broken for years. Normally, I'll know it's time to get my hair cut when it naturally grows into something wholly unmanageable, or when some female friend or family member says "hey, what's up?"

My sister has had no end of amusement in goofing about how I'm "growing wings" (on the sides), calling me Sonny Bono (when my hair gets too shaggy), or occasionally telling me that the "5th Beatle called, and wants his hair back..."

I dunno. Of late, I've been into the "cut it short, make it messy, and then don't cut it again for three to six months..."

bedhead gets to be quite the spectacle towards these latter months. With some hairspray or good Pomade, I could probably get some nice Robert Smith (ala Disintegration era Cure) hair going right now...
