Microphones for toms

we generally use the josephson e22s or the akg 451. microphones on top and bottom heads...bussed to the same place. flip one of the two out of phase. see what sounds closest to what you're looking for. mix levels to tape accordingly. and sennheiser 421's are not bad microphones. sure, there are better ones, but you could do a lot worse. 421's would be just fine.

Microphones for toms

I have a pair of Rode NT5's that I like a good bit, but I mostly just use them for overheads (lack of money, lack of enough active inputs for a full live setup [again a lack of money]). I place them over and pretty close to the cymbals, (which flank the head toms on either side), but slightly off and they get a pretty good response and mix. I should probably work on positioning some more, however. These mics get a very clear sound, flat frequency response. I'm happy with them. I do not know much about these other mics, though. I've been looking into some small dynamic ones for the toms, actually.

Good luck.
