seriously, does music suck now?

1
i was posting on another music forum and someone repeated the time honoured cliche that there was no good new music anymore. immediately i thought "that's bullshit, i hear great music all the time!" and then spent about ten minutes trying to think of a few examples. i looked on my ipod and realised that i've basically stopped listening to new music. can anyone help me with a big long list of bands that are touring or recording in the last six months or so? or is it true and music really does blow now?

the national,

Yeah, Nonesuch have always been pretty consistant, but many of the artists aren't "new".

I guess it depends what exactly you consider to be "new" music.

I just got into T-Rex recently, so they're new to me.

Calexico are great, Rys...Loretta. But they've been around nearly 10 years.

There's a band here in Houston called Spain Colored Orange. Name aside, they are an excellent band.

The Bottomless Pit. Hell, they're less than a year old, correct? Great, GREAT fucking band.

I used to search out "new" bands all the time but as I've gotten older, I tend to focus more on my own music, past things I may have missed out on or I simply don't have the time and can't be arsed to look anymore.

I just bought my first 'new release' in maybe 9mos the other day.

Only it came out in 2004.

I heard this song on the radio, and I thought, shit, that's good. And I waited until the DJ told me that it was the Sonnets.

Eventually, I got around to buying the record with this song.

The record is called Mystery Girl, and the song is called "The Sea."

Turns out they are from Chicago, and they have been from Chicago for 14yrs!! Ha ha! This is almost as old as Silkworm!

Who recorded this album? Turns out it is Russ Arbuthnot! Where did he record it? Electrical Audio! Small world!

The record is pretty decent. They're at their best when they're a little weird--the stuff that is more stock garage rock doesn't do it for me as much.

But "The Sea," she is a really good song in a garagey Wipers/Burma vibe. And overall there is a relentless quality to the Sonnets that I appreciate. I like the album more the more I hear, so perhaps it is very good and I have not flashed to it yet.

Go here, and listen to "The Sea."

Major, I try not to comment on such things, but you are too kind. Thanks. And it is so nice, this just-discovered-T.-Rex period.

I think the ease and accessibility of recording, posting, and putting music out has flooded the everything with a bunch of mediocre, uninteresting, self indulgent, tasteless, mind numbing, god awful, senseless crap. though a few folks are doing great stuff. examples class: john vanderslice, big business, shannon wright and yann tierson, blonde redhead, vaz, spoon, and a handful of local people I wish to not embarrass by posting their names. i realize that these folks have consistently released good stuff and aren't new but the material is new. does that count?
