2I guess as of this, I'm the first CRAP vote. Huh.
I never really liked him before, but I think the recycling of "Candle In The Wind" to make a cheap extra buck put him over the top. So many bad songs...

OH, I have to disagree with you here. Elton was young and hungry and HUGE up to about '77 or'78. "Yellow Brick Road", "capt. Fantastic", "Madman", "Don't Shoot", "Blue Moves", etc. were great great records. He was kinda spotty after that ("Empty Garden" was a good song). He then must have gotten too rich and fat to keep on track. I am a parent so I have had to sit through many of his Disney movie theme songs and I now know the sound of money. I am sure he does not give a rats ass about it as he rides his boat sized checks all the way to the bank.
Also, his "Candle in the Wind" remake was done for charity. He and his record company donated all profits of it (along with the three other songs on that EP) to the Princess Diana Memorial Fund who in turns helps charities throughout the world. It sold just under 31.8 million copies, became the world's most successful single. It went platinum nine times in the UK alone and reached number one in 22 countries around the globe. A google search showed early earnings of the record to be upwards of 34 million dollars but I am sure that is low and only an early account. I find it hard to poopoo such an act of charity, no matter how bad the music within. Does the act of charity make it a good song/recording? No, not at all. But still, jeez! I think he deserves a 'get-out-or-crap' card or something.

Okay, so he recycled it to make someone else a quick buck. Couldn't he be half-arsed to, you know, write a new song?
Anyway, here are some songs I will turn off when I hear them:
Candle In The Wind
Saturday's Alright
Crocodile Rock
Sad Songs Say So Much
Levon
Tiny Dancer
I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Rocket Man
Daniel
Bennie And The Jets (well, I might leave that one one)
I'm Still Standing
Philadelphia Freedom
Your Song
Elderberry Wine
Anything to do with Disney
(full disclosure - I had to do a search for some of the titles)
I give him one point for almost being the singer in King Crimson. Oh, and he doesn't even write the words to his songs. CRAP

7His ballads are pretty good in the 70's, but anytime he tried to rock out like Crocadile Rock or Saturday Nights All Right For Fighting I find it painfull and forced and must turn the radio off. In fact, if I even hear that annoying plunky intro to crocadile rock, it's gone within the middle of the first chord.
Last year here in Milwaukee was the 100 year Harley Fest. The finale was a big concert whose headliner was kept a huge secret. All the folks there where thinking ZZ Top, The Stones, Aerosmith - these are Bikers with their fake/purchased tough guy looks and all. You could have heard the collective groan of over 100,000 of these people a mile away when the secret headliner came to stage -------- Elton John.
Needless to say, people were real pissed/dissapointed.
Somebody obviously did not think this through.
I was glad that these annoying people with their obnoxiously loud bikes were leaving. If my car had a muffler that sounded that shitty I would get a ticket. They deserve Elton.

8Not Crap w/ a bit of waffle, he wrote enough good stuff early on, but gave birth to post-Jerry Lee Lewis Piano Rock, ewww.
When word got out that Elton John was to be the surprise guest at the 100th Harley Davidson anniversary Rally, everyone thought the Outlaws were going to throw Elton in his piano and toss him into Lake Michigan.
Yes, Elton was considered for the 2nd lp "In The Wake Of Poseidon", but Greg Lake agreed to do it right before ELP took off. "
Bryan Ferry also auditioned. Yikes!

9Don't forget that he played keyboards for the precursor of Gentle Giant for awhile as well (live)...
"Funeral for a Friend" is a great tune. Not a fan of all of his work, but he sure can play and sure can write...

10Side 1 of Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy is one of my favorite sides ever. I also adore Tumbleweed Connection, Elton and Bernie's rejoinder to The Band (especially "Burn Down the Mission" and "My Father's Gun"), "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," "Levon," and lots of album tracks, in particular "I've Seen the Saucers" from Caribou. I even like "Philadephia Freedom." I think these achievements more than make up for "I'm Still Standing."
Not crap.
Not crap.
