Are there any?

All I know are the good American ones.

Please show me how incompetent my searching has been thus far by producing a long list of good independent labels in the UK.

Any help will appreciated and possibly rewarded.

Cheers.

First and foremost check out Gringo records.

Then look up the following: Pickled Egg, Unlabel, Awkward Silence, Monotreme, Vacuous Pop, Skam, Duophonic, Rocket Girl, Touch, Type and, er, Warp.

If you pm me your email address I have a database of UK labels with hyperlinks to their websites.

Hope that helps!

I've had my lunch now, and my brain is working more,

mute are part owned by EMI i believe, although Daniel Miller still seems to run it, he's been in there a couple of times when I've been in there (using the studio in the office which is pretty good!).

are good for kind of indie pop stuff, (broken family band, herman dune, etc)

Domino? (yes I know they do arctic monkeys and franz ferdinand and are doubtless part of sanctuary or something) but they do put out Hood, Pram, bonnie prince billy, etc.

Rock Action (mogwai's label, part chimp, errors etc)

chemikal underground (delgado's label)

static caravan (pysche folk stuff like Tunng)

riot season (really good psyche out rock stuff on this label like pharoah overlord/ mainliner/ etc) www.riotseason.com

bella Union, simon raymonde from the cocteau twins label, post rock stuff like rothko/ bikini atoll, and poppy lush sounding stuff like my latest novel.

Guided Missile twisted up pop stuff http://guided.ubisan.com/
(basically alot of bands sound like the fall, but that's good!)

Birdwar , david thomas broughton/ last of the real hardmen so essentially folksy/ fahey/ experimental stuff

fierce panda have put out some excellent releases over the years. but i did sound for some band a few days ago who are having their next single released by FP and they were SHITE. truly, the dullest, most pedestrian current-indie-with-lots-of-hi-hats sound you could get. i don't know if this is a one-off blip on the FP radar or the sign of sad times ahead...
anyway, running riot records hasn't done anything for a while, but there's an ace back catalogue (and distro) here.

city slang is owned by EMI as well... and called Labelsuk or something like that, the dude that ran it when it was "indie" left a couple of years ago, and too pure is part of beggars although I guess beggars is indie, so yes 4AD, XL, Too Pure, all part of beggars now. Actually I guess sanctuary is indie too in that it's owned by one guy even if he is a BIG BUSINESS dude.. So Rough Trade is still indie i guess. My bro' did some work for sanctuary (designed some software or something) and apparently the head guy has a massive EDDIE head on his desk. ROCKING.
