Anybody have good advice for a pair of hi hat cymbals, that record well. Hi hats that are not so loud. We play rock music. Nothing that loud or heavy. Well maybe we play loud. But not that heavy. Anyways, anybody have some hi hats that they love for recording, in the 200 to 300 dollar price range?

Try an old pair of k's, if you can afford it. I know a guy who rents them....Soft and cushy, not loud.
pm me and I'll show you where to go

I got to listen to all the zildjian and paiste hi hats. I was amazed to pick the zildjian K's as my favorites. But thats what I got. They will be here in a few days. Thanks guys.

the bigger the hi-hats, the quieter they will be in the overall mix.
Also cheap tinny shitty hihats you can bend with your hands will be quieter, which is a boon in the recording situation

As a general rule, I tend not to even mic the hats b/c they're a bit rough sounding (very sibilant) and that can get to be a bitch to mix with the snare being right there. I find there's plenty of hi-hat in the overheads and snare mic(s) for my taste.

Really? I always thought it was the opposite. I have 14" Zildjian Rock hats and they are always super loud in the mics. Maybe it's the "Rock" tag on them?

So Robot, you like them K's, huh? I've liked every pair of K's that I've heard. How much did they run you? Did you get 13" or 14"?

I got the 14's because I wanted the bigger ones. They sounded better to me. Yeah I definitely do not mic the hi hat at all anymore. I just use the overhead and snare mics as well.
