There are lots of guitar based songs, and there are lots of synthesizer based songs. Often a little of the one is used to decorate the other.
But I'm hard pressed to think of bands that use both on relatively equal footing AND the music isn't some kind of mushy ballad, new age junk, "progressive rock" junk, or what have you.
Way back when Killing Joke did some stuff that had a hard edge with both synths and guitars aggressively filling the mid-range. The synth sounds were very obvious, and the guitars never wimped out.
If I liked that who else should I check out? Especially current bands?
Or do synths and loud guitars just not mix?
Mixing synthesizers and guitars - who does it HARD and well?
2This is a good thread topic. Very hard.
I would agree on Killing Joke. Perhaps also PiL.
Cop Shoot Cop were a nice piece of aggressive trash, but they only had bass.
I dunno, I'm stumped.

7The early records of The Comsat Angels - who were influenced by Chrome and Pere Ubu amongst others.
It's hard to think of many good bands who do it currently.

8One of my personal favorite musical 'subgenres'...
This Heat.
Transam (?), sometimes...
Laddio Bolocko, sort of
In St. Louis there used to be a band called Man Igno, who utilized distorted keyboard to great effect (math rock)
There is a band up here in Seattle...called 'Sean'...who use keyboard and guitar...grindy math. Great if you are into it.
I find myself listening to Hawkwind a bit...too much pot, I imagine.
Most of the bands listed on this post are bands I wish I could successfully rip off...

10early Gary Numan/Tubeway Army up to Telekon.
Comsat Angels, especially Waiting for A Miracle, Sleep No More, Time Considered (60% of it..) and parts of Fiction.
This Heat, any of it.
Pere Ubu.
Wall of Voodoo: Dark Continent LP
And maybe me: http://myspace.com/klugel525 or maybe not.. the song dBoon Hockey Teeth is the rockingest keyboard and bass number in this vein, recorded on a tascam portastudio. The rest of the stuff is moogs, beats and bass guitar.
I am sure I can think of more but it is just not coming to me right now.
